Canker sores, irritation

Canker sores, irritation

I performed oral sex for the first time two nights ago. I woke up the next night with light bumps on the inside of my upper lip. It was the same color of my lip and didn't hurt but felt like sand paper. Someone advised me that it was just irritation and to use mouth wash to see if it goes away. I did. The sand paper feeling went away, but now I have two little white dots that look and feel like canker sores. I get canker sores all the time, so I know what it feels like. I'm worried because we didn't use a condom. Do I have an STD? He says he's clean, but I know that sometimes people don't know. Any information would be helpful.

Welcome to the STD forum.

Oral sex in general is safe sex -- not totally free of STD risk, but much more so than genital intercourse.  In any case, no STD causes the sort of symptoms you describe.  Further, no STD (and no other infection) can ever cause symptoms in 24-36 hours; 2-3 days is the minimum.  My guess is that the "bumps" are nothing abnormal -- you might just be noticing normal mucus glands or other variations in the lining of your lips and mouth, which might seem more prominent because of some anxiety about this event.  Of course see a health care provider if you are convinced something is clearly different or abnormal.  But from what you say, I see no need for worry about STD or for testing.

I hope this helps.  Best wishes--  HHH, MD
