Cefalexin (Keflex) for Gonorrhea?

by seekingadvicefromyou, Aug 17, 2005 12:00AM
Hello I was wondering specifically if Cefalexin will cure gonorrhea?  How about chlamydia if it is also present?  If it will cure it what is the recommended dosage and for how long?
The sexual encounter in question was five days ago and symptoms seem to be starting...

Cefalexin is not recommended for gonorrhea, but usually would work if taken for several days.  But it has no effect at all against chlamydia.

If you had a sexual encounter you are worried about, PLEASE do not treat yourself with leftover cefalexin or anything else, especially if you are developing symptoms.  See an STD-knowledgeable heatlhcare provider for diagnosis and proper treatment.  You can go to your local health department STD clinic for expert, confidential, lifestyle-sensitive, and free or very low cost care.

Good luck-- HHH, MD

Oh, yes....also...If cefalexin will not work what do you specifically recomend as the fastest (hopefully 1x) treatment/dosage for both gonorrhea and chlamydia?
Thanks so much.

I'm not going to give advice about dose for treatment that I think is unwise.  No amount of the drug will treat chlamydia.
