Chlamydia -- not going away... help!

I had a stupid, random sexual encounter (oral sex for about five minutes) around July 4th.  About a week or so later, I started feeling a weird sensation in my urethra.  I got an occasional stinging sensation about fifteen seconds after stopping a urine flow (never really during peeing).  I was also able to "milk" up a smal amount of a mucousy discharge one day.  A urine test around July 17th came back as positive for chlamydia.  My doctor prescribed doxicyclene (sp), 2x per day for 7 days.  I took my doses, but fear dairy in my diet may have interfered with its effectiveness.  Around day 6 of the doxy cycle, a slight burning associated with urination persisted.  My doc told me to stop the doxy -- which I did -- and he prescribed 1 g azithromycin and 4 tablets (don't recall the dosage) of metrodinazole (sp).  I took those on Wednesday evening, Jul 22.  Here it is 7 days later and I still have a tingling in my urethra (though rarely while peeing), it's mostly when I need to pee.  It's almost like my bladder doesn't tell me it's time to pee, but that the tip of my penis does.  I can also feel something in my urethra, like a slight tingle or burn almost all the time.  Last night just before bed, I noticed a mucousy substance inside the tip of my urethra.  I was expecting to find a stain or evidence of dischange in my shorts when I awoke this morning, but found none, but I did have an episode earlier today when my penis stuck to the fabric of my underwear (briefs).

ON top of being annoying, this is very worrisome.  How likely is it that the 6 days of doxy followed by 1 g of azythromycin didn't kill off the chlamydia?  Could it be another infection?  I had NSU 2 years ago, but a shot and a small handful of pills from my former doctor cleared it up within five days.  I've never had something like I'm experiencing now.  Is it possible I just have to suffer through another week of symptoms but that the chlamydia is gone?

You seem to be expecting fairly immediate relief.  Give it another week or two.  It takes a while sometimes. As Grace said, lots of fluids to flush out your system.  It would be better not to drink alcohol but I know how it is when you go on vacation, so try your best to limit the amount.

Well, my test results have come back: negative for HIV, negative for syphilis. All I'm waiting for are ureaplasma and mycoplasma.  But I'm 2 days out from finishing the z pack and am still having symptoms (discharge yestrday afternoon while at the beach and a continued feeling like there's something in my urethra).  I think I need to wait some time to see if this resolves. If not, I'm going to insist on a urethral swab/culture.

Since it was your last dose it should be ok 24 hours, but this is a question really best suited for your Dr or a nurse at the Dr's office just to be sure.

Called my doc last night.  He sent me back to the lab this morning for a blood draw (I suggested testing for all STDs) and another urine sample.  I had evidence of slight discharge in my underwear yesterday when I got undressed after work and was definitely mucousy inside my urethra this morning.  Per my doctor's suggestion, I held off from peeing this morning until I was at the hospital lab and could give them the sample.  When I got home I took my final dose of Z pack.  Stinging associated with urinating is all but gone.

I haven't had any alcohol since last weekend (before I started Z pack) but am going away on vacation this morning.  At this point, is it okay to drink or will alcohol affect the efficacy of the Z pack over the next few days?

At this point can only advise you to keep following up with your Dr.

Update:  I called my Dr late last week to explain that I was still having occasional pain.  He said it could be lingering inflamation in the urethra but prescribed Z-Pack (500 mg on day 1, then 250 mg each day for the next 4 days) in case it didn't clear up in a couple of days.  I made a deal with myself: if I was still having some pain on Sunday, I would start the Z-Pack.  (Background: I was diagnosed as positive for chlamydia but negative for gonorrhea on 7/17, did six days of doxicyclene starting 7/17, then a single dose of both azithromycin and metrodinazole around 7/23.)  As of Sunday, I was still having occasional pain, so I started the Z-Pack on 8/2.  Things seemed to be better until last night, 8/4, when I noticed evidence of a small amount of dried discharge in my black briefs.  I only have one pill left in the Z-Pack arsenal (to be taken tomorrow morning) and experienced some pain about an hour ago after visiting the men's room.  What the heck?!?!

I never said I never did those things!  LOL  But I would never do them outside a relationship -- I am very safety oriented.  Anyhow, I know this one encounter was the event that caused my current situation.  I routinely get tested for all STDs (including HIV).  My last tests were back in December and were all clear.  I had a personal health issue (a cancer scare which turned out okay) that had me out of the dating scene for most of the time from January through the early summer.  My July 4th encounter was my first dive back into the dating pool, so to speak.  I definitely caught this from that encounter -- no doubts about it.

Your provider has covered most of the bases at this point. Give it a few more days and things should settle down. meanwhile drink lots of fluids and keep your urinary tract well flushed out.

I should have said so, but when I did the urine test on the 17th, my doctor had me tested for for chlamydia and gonorrhea.  The test came back negative for gonorrhea, positive for chlamydia.

I would also like to note that chlymida rarely if ever infects the throat so getting it from oral sex is unlikely. My guess is that it is either gonorrhea or NGU.

It can take a couple of weeks for the symptoms to resolve. Be patient and take your medication as prescribed. According to Dr. HHH, resistance to antibiotics is not an issue with chlamydia infection.
