Chlamydia - Effectivess of less than 1g of Zithromax

by vv17s, Jun 24, 2007 12:00AM
Dear Doctor,

I usually have problems swallowing large tablets, so I crushed up a single 500mmg tablet of Zithromx and mixed it with a bananna shake.  I drank most of this, but it was very bitter, and therefore there was some left which I discarded.  I then took the other 500mg whole with some water.

I have some questions:

1. Will the dosage I took clear my chlamydia?
2. If yes, when can I start having sex with my partner again? - He has completed his course.
3. When will the symptoms disappear, ie how many days?

I am female, 34 years, 55 kgs, healthy.

Thank you in advance.

There are no doctors in this forum. If you click on "Forums" at the top of the page, click on Sexually Transmitted Diseases link on the top cluster of forums labelled "Ask a Doctor." These questions will be answered by a medical professional while the ones answered here are by everyday people. There is a cost to ask a question (I believe $15.00).

Personally, I would HIGHLY HIGHLY HIGHLY NOT recommend that you ever crush up medication like you did. It is compressed into a tablet for a reason and if they wished to hand out powders the pharma's would do so. One dose of 500mg (whole tablet) of Zithromax will not clear up chlamydia.

I did speak to the pharmacist who dispensed the drug to me.  She called the manufacturer (Pfizer) who said to her that Zithromax was OK to be broken up and mixed into food as it is not viewed as slow release, and it does come in a suspension anyway.

My main question was about dosage, and if I had taken enough for the drug to be effective, ie most of the 500mg mixed in a drink (but boy was it bitter!) and a whole 500mg pill.

Thanks in advance.
