Chlamydia/Gonorrhea? - Light Penile Burning

Thanks for all the work you do on this forum. I have a straight-forward question. About 4 days ago I had protected sex (condom) with a CSW in China. The condom did not break, it was a brief encounter, and we both showered before and after the encounter. However, starting about 1.5 days later I had some burning inside my penis, close to but not on the tip, almost like in the urethra. I have browsed the internet and there is conflicting information about gonorrhea/chlamydia infection if a condom is used.

I have no other symptoms - discharge, fever, etc., only some gastro issues which are par for the course for me when traveling. The pain is not worse when urinating or masturbating. It more like a constant light burn. I will return home in 5 days and would like to get this resolved quickly. Is it possible to contract gonorrhea or chlamydia with protected sex? I am thinking that the burning is more likely related to the size of the condom (small) that they seem to use here and that perhaps I gave myself a small urethral tear. It looks like meds are readily available over the counter here so trying to figure out if I should buy some Cipro and/or Zithromax/Doxycycline or just leave it alone. I should mention that about 8 months ago I was diagnosed with a rather strong UTI, which is less common for men but maybe I am more prone possibly due to frequent and long travel to tropical areas.

Thanks for your thoughts!

Condoms are close to 100% protective in research studies evaluating their effectiveness for preventing gonorrhea, chlamydia and nongonococcal urethritis (NGU).  Because of the nature of the studies and the fact that persons who say they have used condoms cannot be verified to do so, there is some discussion as to whether or not they are "perfect" for STD prevention or do have a very small failure rate.  Given your history, it sounds as though the condom worked as it is supposed to have and therefore it is most unlikely that you got an STD from the exposure you describe.  My guess is that there is some small residual irritation which will go away on its own.  My advice would be for you to wait this out for another day or two, anticipating that it will go away.  If it does, don't worry.  If the symptoms persist or get worse however, I would get checked.,  Given you prior history of UI's and the fact that this could be a non-STD related UTI rather than an STD, I think getting checked for both STDs and a UTI is important so that you will know what you are being treated for and how to best be treated.  EWH
