Chlamydia testing

First off here is some background. I started dating my boyfriend in August, I had my annual in July and I didn't have any STD's then in September I started having problems with my IUD and so I went back to the doctor, they ran another test for chlamydia and gonerrhea and they were both negative. Last week I came up positive for chlamydia. How is that possible? Can I have chlamydia and have a negative test?

I just tested positive for chlamydia.  My health care provider includes a chlamydia test in pap smears and physicals, but i always DEMAND a test for everything there is a test for, including HIV.  I get a form which tells me which tests were ordered, though I don't understand half of what it says. So hopefully your annual in July actually did test for STDs. But if you tested negative in September, you may have gotten infected anytime after that.  Did you yourself see paperwork or hear firsthand from his doctor that your boyfriend's September test was negative? Your boyfriend may have had it from before he met you or he may have cheated. That may never be known.  I'm only suggesting this cuz not everyone has the courage to admitting to an STD, regardless of when they got it and if they knew they had it or not.  Before I became sexually active with my ex, he SWORE he had just been tested and was negative and hadn't been with anyone else after that test. I told him I have it and he may be infected.  NOW he admits to lying about having been tested. he admitted to lying about other women, too. Turns out his last test was probably years ago and there have been numerous women.  So my lesson learned is that to be sure a man has been tested, go to the hospital or clinic togther and don't have sex until you see the results. To clear up confusion, why not go to a free clinic with him and get a "second opinion" test? Then you know you both got the same test at the same time. I , too, would like to know if you can have it and test negative.

How were you tested for Chlamydia?  Different tests have different accuracies.  The urine based DNA amplification tests (NAAT) are the most accurate.  The chances of two people both having chlamydia and testing negative on those tests are pretty small. (less than 1%)

However something like a culture is a good deal less accurate, and could result in false negatives.  Especially if one/both of you had recently taken antibiotics.    So, whilte it's not likely, it's certainly possible that the tests were wrong.

My boyfriend did get tested September as well and it was negative at that time. He did go back to the doctor and is waiting on the results, they will be back on Monday. We are assuming that it will come back positive though. I am sorry I forgot to mention that.
