Chronic skin itching

I am a 20 year old, sexually active male in college.  About a year ago I was seeing someone who would spend the nights in my dorm.  Shortly after we stopped seeing each other(which was short-lived), I began to have intense itching all over my body(and quite often at nighttime).  I went to a primary-care physician and he said he was 90% sure it was a scabies infection(because I had these small red bumps around my thumbs).  He prescribed Lindane which wasn't very effective.  Since then I have seen 3 dermatologists who have all stated that they see NO active infection in spite of my swearing to them that I feel things crawling over me(especially on my legs and head).  I have had several applications of Permethrin and even taken Ivermectin to compliment the topical applications.  I am very conscientious of my hygiene and wash all my clothes, sheets, etc. in hot water and regularly.  There is no "sign" of this infection except from my own sensation on my skin.  I feel these things crawling around(or even jumping) on my legs and hair.  I took Prednisone to rule out any allergic reaction and that did not help.  My current dermatologist told me he doesn't think it is a lice infection as those are supposedly easy to diagnose.  He keeps diagnosing me as pruritis or urticaria and prescribes me Atarax to cool my nerves.  My brother had slept in my bed shortly after I visited home and has the same symptoms and unfortunately passed it on to my mother.  The symptoms are no where as bad as at first but I'm worried that I'll live with these residual effects forever.  It has been nearly a whole year and I have received treatment for this throughout the year(another reason to rule out my body's sensitivity to immediately killing the mites--if this even is a mite infection).  I'm desperate and any help is much appreciated.  I am worried about giving this to my new romantic interest and have been strict about not coming into long and close contact with each other until I can resolve this.   Thank you!

Hey, How are you doing?

I know this is a really old post and i'm guessing you probably wont even see this?

I was hoping you might be able to tell me if you ever found out what your problem was?

I believe alot of people around the world are having this same problem. The medical world either doesnt know what it is or are playing dumb because they have no idea how to deal with it? Whether it be a reaction from new chemcals or poisens that are put into mainstream food supplies or everyday items? Who knows?
Knowbody seems to know.

They definitely do not want to go out of their way to help, other than give you every itching relief product there is.

I have the exact same symptoms, to the detail, just like you describe it, to the word. I have read many, many reports of other people having the exact same issue, which is very disturbing.

So, it's been almost 10 years since you posted. I hope you read this message. I pray you will see it and reply to me.

Did you ever find an answer or a cure for this problem?

I'm not sure why you are posting this in the std forum, as what you have clearly isn't an std.

You should try posting in our dermatology forum - http://www.medhelp.org/forums/show/65 - and you should see your doctor already.  Its been 5 months.

You might post this on the dermatology forum.  This isn't any std that I know of.

My dermatologist said that technically it isn't an STD but it is transmitted in a fashion very similar and concurrent with contracting other STDs(i.e. sleeping next to someone.  I am familiar with Morgellons but that involves hallucinations and the visibility of thread-like fibers protruding out of scabs on the body.  I am convinced I have some sort of parasitic infection of the skin, that are closely tied to the hair on my body...

Hi there -

I don't know what this is, but its not an std if its passed through casual contact or sharing beds.

I did read something about Morgellons disease, which produces symptoms like yours, but docs are split on whether or not it even exists.  Its not an std, but you might find some info by googling it.
