Cold sores and oral sex

Cold sores and oral sex

I recently had oral sex performed on me.  The girl I was with turned out to have active cold sores forming.  This occured five days ago.  Now I am experiencing burning during urination and it is only occurring in the very tip of my penis.  There is also some redness surrounding the urethra on the tip.  The pain only occurs during urination.

I understand HSV1 can be transmitted to the genitals.  Assume the possibilities are great if the cold sores were active?  What if any treatment should I be considering.

From your description, it sounds like a good bet you are in the early stages of genital herpes due to HSV-1.  Yes indeed, someone is particularly likely to transmit HSV at the time "active sores are forming".  There are no self-treatments for herpes; if you need treatment, you need a prescription.  See a health care provider immediately, preferably in the next 24 hours.  If you don't have a regular one (or even if you do but are not certain about his or her STD knowledge), visit your local health department STD clinic.

Good luck--  HHH, MD

I also wanted to comment that I'm not experiencing any discharge.

I'm not so concerned about your genital exposure to your partner's mouth, which is pretty low risk in most cases.  I'm much more concerned about your oral symptoms after performing fellatio on a stranger.

OK...so let me clarify.  I do not have any symptoms occuring in my mouth.  The only thing that occurred was she performed oral sex on me.  I don't have any discharge from my penins....but am experiencing a fairly severe burn during urination.  The burn seems to be only coming from the tip.  Should I still be concerned about contracting genital herpes from her mouth?

Oops--disregard the previous comment. That reply was intended for another thread, which has since been deleted.  Doesn't apply to you.  Sorry.

With burning pain on urination and redness at the tip, you definitely should be concered about acquiring genital herpes from your partner's oral herpes.  That doesn't mean you have it, though.  Don't assume anything is definite until you see a health care provider.
