Concerned with Herpes/HIV/EVERYTHING!!!

by cpa222, Oct 24, 2005 12:00AM
I had unprotected oral and vaginal sex with a stripper at a bachelor party 8 weeks ago (whole event lasting about 5-10 minutes).  Because I was very nervous, my doctor put me on Ciprofloxaxin and Zithromax after 2 days of the event. I was tested after 10 days with blood work and urinalysis for everything and all the tests came back negative.  I had slight burning on the penis and scrotum that came and went, roughly lasting about 3 to 4 days and then not returning for a week or so.  I was freaking out, so I went to see an infectious disease specialist and he told me that the chance of contracting HIV from unprotected vaginal sex with infected parter is about 1 in 800-1,000.  He said to get tested after 6 weeks and if it comes back negative then I am allset, which I have read is what you recommend as well.  I continued to get the burning on the penis and scrotum and noticed at about 4.5 weeks sort of a rash on my scrotum and also little flesh colored (some reddish) bumps on the penis head and under the penis head (the size of pin heads, not blistering or filling with puss), along with a slight itch in the general area, so I went back to my doctor and he said he did not see anything that resembled Herpes (which I was worrying about) or any other STD  and that the rash looked like a yeast infection.  (I always get jock itch, but I never remember it affecting the penis and scrotum, usually just the inner thighs/buttoxs, which clears up in a week or so).   I bought some Clotrimazole anti-fungal creme when the doc told me about the yeast infection, but I did not use for the recommended 2 weeks.  I used about 4 days and then stopped...  So I am going to try for 2 weeks straight again...  So he told me to relax and I would have blood work again in 6 weeks for HIV, Herpes 1 and 2 and Hep.  So, I had blood work at 6 weeks and 3 days.  Once again, everything came back negative.  I saw the test result sheet and it said negative next to everything and I believe for Herpes it said <.9 (does that sound right???)  I told my doctor about the burning/rash and he told me that it is nothing and that he does not recommend anymore testing and to put the event behind me...  The rash started again on Friday and is still uncomfortable today...

2 questions.

#1 Does the symptoms I describe, ie: burning on the penis and scrotum, reddness and rashlike on the scrotum, burning on the head of penis with small flesh color (some reddish) bumps on the head and under the head, with a slight itch in the general area, not painful to touch, sound like Herpes or any other STD?

#2 WOULD YOU RECOMMEND ANY FURTHER TESTING??????

Thank you, I admire what you do for us all...

No, those symptoms do not sound like herpes or any STD.  I agree the herpes result of under 0.9 is a clear negative, and you also can rely on the negative HIV test result.  I do not recommend any further testing for HIV, herpes, or any STD.  I doubt your symptoms are related in any way to the sexual encounter you describe, except for the possibility of anxiety related to the event--and it sounds like your doctor agrees.

Thanks for the thanks.  Best wishes--   HHH, MD

Thank you Doc.

Could this be a yeast infection?  Have you heard of yeast causing these symptoms to come and go?  So to be assured again, 6 weeks is enough to get a solid result for HIV and Herpes? I want to make sure my partner is safe...  I guess it could be coincidence...  Life sometimes throws these things our way, I guess...

I would be ver interested to hear the result of your diagnosis as I have similiar symptoms to you. Keep us posted.

Conceivably a fungal infection (although probably not yeast, a particular kind of fungus), but your doctor should be able to recognize such a problem.  See your doctor again if your symptoms persist.  Whatever you have, it isn't an STD and you can be 100% confident you don't have anything you can transmit to a sex partner.

Thank you Doc!

dorky,
how long have you been having these symptoms and do they come and go?  If they come and go what is the pattern?

I have posted this already on here, but my question is regarding the FAQ sheet that is put together on here regarding HSV.  It says that some outbreaks are mild, that there is some itching and redness.  The way I interpret this statement is that there are no lesions or sores, only itching and redness/irritation.  For mild herpes outbreaks, is there an absence of lesions/sores/scabbing or is there always sores/lesions?  Please clarify.

Some people with herpes have redness and itching, but only a few have ONLY redness and itching.  On the other hand, redness and itching of the genitals is extremely common; everybody has it from time to time.  Therefore, of all people with genital redness and itching, herpes is very rarely the cause; and herpes is never the cause for diffuse redness and itching ("my scrotum is red and itches", for example).

Feel free to start a new thread if you need a more detailed response.

I am sorry if this sounds silly but redness and pain on the scrotum and shaft together with these pinhead lesions sounds like an STD but you are the doctor so I will go with you on that. I can understand redness and pain on its own might be bacterial or jock itch whatever but what if it is coupled with tingling pain every now and then and pinhead sores around the head of the shaft? That's where there is confusion.

I agree it sounds like an STD, but I saw 2 doctors and Doc HHH, all saying I am fine.  I was tested at 6 weeks and everything came back negative, including HSV.  So, I will trust the professionals in this area..

Did you get tested???

by dorky, Oct 25, 2005 12:00AM
I haven't been tested for HSV yet but will do it. What were you diagnosed with?

I was tested at 10 days and a little over 6 weeks.  Both tests came back with everything negative.  I have seen 2 doctors and an infectious disease doctor, all saying that I am fine.  I guess these symptoms are just from a fungal, I get jock itch quit often, but I don't remember it ever affecting any area other than the inner thighs and buttox.  But maybe due to the circumstances, I am over analysing and noticing EVERY little thing...

Thank you for your response. I noticed you said you also had pinhead lesions. Did they say what that was due to? I am sory for asking but really scared at the moment .

They are not lesions.  I dont think I said "lesions", if I did, I apologize.  The are more like small (pin head sized) bumps.  Very difficult to notice unless you really look hard, and sometimes, I do not see them.  Doc HHH said they sound like penis papules.  I have not had any blisters, lesions or scabs at all..  And blieve me I have been checking..  My doc also said I could be irritating it by doing so much investigative work down there.
