Confused about HSV test results

by Deanna B, Apr 12, 2007 12:00AM
Hello
I'm confused I recently was told by my physician that my HSV-1 IgG was 3.32   HSV-1 IgM negative  and HSV-2 IgG 2.25 and HSV-2 IGM negative.  He said he would have to get back to me because even he was confused with my results.  He thinks it could be a false-positive with the HSV-2 Igm which was 2.25  Has anyone else ran into this problem? I didn't have any symptoms I was just having a routine check up.  HElp!

I think the IGM tests are useless and you should go by the IGG.  Your IGG tests state that you do have genital herpes.  However, anything below 3.0 may indicate a false positive.  You should have a Western Blot test done.  Also, you should ask Dr. H about this on the STD Dr./Patient forum.  Good luck

Hello Thanks for your reply.  I've been try to email the doctor but it says it's full at this time. I will look into the other tests.

If your doctor uses quest labs - you want to have the herpes inhibition assay test # 17170 performed. It will tell you if your hsv2 result is a false positive due to your previous hsv1 infection.

If you've never had a symptom of genital herpes that you are aware of and you have a hsv2 result less than 3.5 and are also hsv1+ - it's always a good idea to get the 2nd test done to confirm that it's indeed hsv2 that the test detected.  The tests we have today are the best they have ever been but they still have some false positives.

As was already said - completely disregard your hsv igm results. They should've never been drawn on you in the first place.

Thanks for the information.  It's soo confusing.  I don't understand the testing... if HSV -2 IgG is less then 3.5 (which it is it's 2.25) and my HSV-2 IgG is 3.32 how can it be false positive? is it because they can't figure out which viris it came from?? Has this happen to anyone you know?  I freaken out

Cross reactivity is fairly common. get the test I mentioned and get the answers you are looking for.

Should I wait a month before I get my next test? or does it matter? should I just ask for a repeat HSV-1 IgG and HSV-2 IgG is that the same as 17170? Thanks

I just got a HSV-2 IgG of 0.92 I was told I was exposed. I've never had any signs of herpes and have never had a cold sore. Since they told me I have been exposed, I started taking "cats claw" which is a very strong vitamin for the immune system. It has even been known to cure HIV among other diseases. I've also found out it can lower IgG levels. If it's true that i have been exposed, is it even possible to lower my IgG levels?

For herpes questions 1. You need to start your own thread (question) and 2. You need to post in the herpes form. See the herpes link at the top of the page.
