Confussed about my daughter test results

by Worried for my 12 y/o daughter, Aug 31, 2007 04:37PM
About a year ago my daughter had a fever and developed blisters around her lips.  Her doctor decided to run some test and the results were the following:

Date: 915/06

Herpes Simplex Virus IGM
HSV IGM AB Titer 1.80 H

HSV 1/2 IGG
TYPE 1 - 3.89H
TYPE 2 - 4.50H

My daughter is not sexually active the only thing I can think of is that I did not know I had HSV-2 and transmitted it to her when I gave birth.  I asked her new doctor to repeat the test just last month and the results were the following:

Date:  8/15/07

HSV 1/2 IGG, HERPESELECT

HERPES TYPE 1 - 4.25 H
HERPES TYPE 2 - 0.09

Is she or not positive for HSV-2?

Please help I haven't been able to rest for almost a year because of this.

Thank you very much...

How old is your daughter? If she's under 14 then the blood test can not be used with any degree of accuracy.  The proper way to handle this would've been for the doctor to get a pcr swab of her lip blister, not do blood tests :(

I was never given any numbers or anything. The NP said the test is pos or it is neg and that is all there is to it. Never heard of the blood test being done though on a child. She probably does need the lesions cultured. Did she kiss someone or share cups recently? Good luck, EB

It looks like she's twelve from the name she's using.  Could it also be that according to the blood test, she's positive for one?  I agree you though, if blood tests aren't accurate in children, a swab is needed.  Sounds like HSV-1 on the lips.

She is twelve. THey only tested her though blood work.  And right now she is having an episode it;s been a year since her last one.  I really appreciate your answers.

I take it you mean she has a cold sore right now?  Plenty of otc treatments for cold sores - many folks recommend the aveeno cold sore ointment with propolis in it. It's under $10 and you just apply it every couple of hours while she's awake.

I really doubt she's hsv2+ .  The blood test should've never been drawn on her in the first place due to her age.  The visual diagnosis of oral herpes aka cold sores would've been good enough on a child her age.  I'd really disregard the hsv2 results - it's most likely a false positive due to her age and her hsv1 infection.
