Constant pain beyond typical herpes zoster pattern

Some time ago I was diagnosed with genital herpes zoster (shingles).  In years past, I might have one or rarely two outbreaks of herpes.  Symptoms would be sharp pain in my penis culminating with a small amount of skin breaking.  The whole episode might last 10 days minimum, three weeks max.

Since the beginning of this year, I've had pain in my penis, my legs and other parts almost constantly.  During this four month period I did have one herpes-like outbreak but I'm not getting any sores or breaking skin other than the one occurance months ago.  Pain is amplified with sitting or lying down.  Pain is less or absent with physical activity.  Most times the pain responds to Gabapentin, although lately I'm finding I have to take a whole lot more of it than I'm comfortable with.

I have a very good GP but I think he's a little stumped with this one.  I'm thinking there is something else at work here besides herpes.  Any learned input would be appreciated.

shingles is herpes zoster. it's the chicken pox virus reactivating. it will not reoccur more than once in a lifetime.

herpes simplex is the cause of oral and genital herpes.  both do reoccur regularly.

Not sure if your post was referring to having genital herpes and also having had shingles in the past or just what?

No matter what, you had shingles long ago so it's not causing this pain now. If you have genital herpes, it's not going to cause non-stop pain like this either.  At this point you need consults with specialists, it's more than what a GP can handle and you need more than throwing medication at you to see if anything helps - you need to find out the cause and deal with that.

good luck!

Something else might be going on but it is not STD related.
