Doesshow up in a chest xray?

by Simple Guy, Dec 13, 2005 12:00AM
Hello, I have a few questions that I am looking for answers. 1st, about 2 months ago I went to a strip club with some of my friends. While at the club I got a lap dance from a striper. During the lap dance I ended up fingering the striper and thats it. After the dance was over the striper lean over to give me a kiss and at the same time she put her tongue in my mouth really quick. I was stupid in that I did not wash my hands until I got home, 45 minutes later.
-So, here is my questions: 2 weeks later, I started experiencing some pain on the side of my body, with a deep cough that then started giving me pain in my back which was making me very weak. Once in a while I also would break into a deep sweat while I was in bed.
-Still today, almost 2 months have passed and I still can't get over the cough and still a very little pain left in my back.
-So, I went to the doctor 4 weeks ago and got a chest xray. The chest xray came up clear and the doctor told me that I have bronchitis so he gave me some antibiotics and cough syrup. I went back to the the doctor last week and he gave me more antibiotics and cough syrup, but still as of today I am still not feeling well. I don't know if I am over reacting.
-My question is: Should I get a HIV test, does chest xrays show early signs of HIV and is there any symptoms for HIV in your teeth, or am I just going crazy and freaking out to much. I would really want your honest opinion. Thank You

First, your exposure was zero risk; HIV is not a concern.  Second, allt he symptoms you describe are much more commonly due to thing other than HIV.  Third, no, HIV infection does not show up on a chest xray.

Given the nature of the exposure you describe, I do not recommend HIV testing.  However, as I have said before, if you are anxious about it despite my reassurance, you may find a negative test result helps you sleep better.  Also, as I just said in another thread, many docs would test anyone with such symptoms for HIV, even if low risk.  If your doc recommends HIV testing, do not assume s/he actually thinks HIV is likely.

Bottom line:  Mellow out and disregard HIV as a cause of your symptoms.

Good luck--  HHH, MD

The exposure you describe was no risk.  I am sure the doctor will give you a similar answer, thus making an HIV test from this exposure unnecessary.  The stripper incedent and the bronchitis are not probably not related.  The only thing you could have caught from her is maybe a cold.  The fact is, bronchitis is common, it happens.  Coughing for an extended period of time is common with bronchitis as well.  I would say the symptoms are not related to the encounter in any way. Put it to rest and relax.  Enjoy the holiday season.
