During active out breaks of genital HSV1, can I transmit the virus by french kissing ?

by wondering311, Jun 24, 2008 12:24AM
I recently got diagnosed with genital herpes type 1 .  I got it from my boy freind's saliva.  Event though he didn't perform oral sex on me but his saliva was used to lubricate me during intercourse (he didn't have any visible sores in his mouth at the time but he has had a history of cold sores since he was a kid).  According to my doctor all I needed to get the virus was an infected saliva & my genital.  My question to you is
# 1, when I have active genital herpes type 1 out breaks but no sores in/around my mouth (never had them), can I transmit the virus if I french kiss some one?
# 2 During my genital out breaks can I kiss my freinds?  When I asked my doctor he said that it is ok to french kiss/kiss,share cups even during active genital herpes outbreaks b/c the viral shedding is in my genital area not in or around the mouth.  He said as long as there is no direct contact with lesions during my out break/ at a time of viral shedding, my partner would be safe
#3 If I have genital herpes type I , is the viral shedding always in/around my genital or can it be also in my saliva ( even though I never had cold sores before,
Can you please clarify,  Your help is greatly appreciated.

If you are only infected genitally, kissing is always fine.  Your doctor is right - you would only be infectious from the area of infection.
