Effectiveness of Valtrex for DST

So my partner is taking Valtrex 1000mg for daily supressive therapy. How long before the pill actually starts supressing the virus, and what are the chances of trasmitting HSV-2 with unprotected sex ??

Your gf is not contagious 24/7!!! Just avoiding sex whenever she doesn't have any genital symptoms present is on average a 96% chance each YEAR of staying hsv2 negative.  Daily suppressive therapy cuts it down to half.  Throw in condoms along with everything else and you are looking at on average a 99% chance each year of staying hsv2 negative. Even with the barest of precautions you will still always be more likely NOT to contract hsv2 than you will to get it from her.  The important part is she needs to remember to take her pill everyday.  In the valtrex and transmission study - the majority of folks who were on suppressive therapy who transmitted the virus did not remember to do that :(

hmm gotcha. well I had intercourse like few days after she took the pill w/o a condom (stupid thinking with wrong head )

so I guess I will see if i get any symptoms ( I am a male) if not then what kind of lbood test should I get ?

How worried should I Be. A outbreak was not present.

Her doctor told her that chances of transmitting when she is taking her valtrex DST of 1000mg was veryy little like 1% or so.

just wanna figure out the numbers.

Took me awhile to figure out the DST - must not have had as good as a nap as I thought I did today....he he he

If your partner started suppressive therapy when there wasn't an active ob present - then it's effective after 5 days.

The chances of transmitting the virus depend on your gender. It's all covered on the valtrex website and also in the herpes handbook at www.westoverheights.com.
