Follow-up Testing?

by andrew38, Jun 20, 2008 09:18AM
Thank you for this great forum.

On May 28th I was a bad boy and had unprotected brief oral sex with someone of questionable character.  After a couple days, I felt some mild urinary tract burning, noticed a very slight discharge and small yellow stains on underwear for about 1 week.  I told my wife I thought I might have a UTI and went to my doctor (we share the same doctor).  I am terrified of my wife learning that I was unfaithful and did not tell my doctor I was bad.  She did a urine strip test which showed an infection and  it was sent to the lab which showed large leuk esterase, wbc=112, rbc=9 and Squamous Epith=10.  A 24hr urine culture  was negative.

I only had sex once with my wife 2 days after the encounter.  My wife went to her Gynecologist and all her tests were negative (swab and urine).  My doctor prescribed Cipro 2x daily for 1 week which I completed a few days ago.  I am considering getting an STD panel from an anonymous testing place to make sure I am cured - what do you think?  Would further testing be accurate after my taking Cipro?

You need to wait at least 2 weeks from taking the antibiotic to test, or your tests might not be accurate.

Did your wife test for STDs?

Your doctor, by law, is not allowed to tell your wife about your medical stuff.

Sorry - you had 112 wbc?  That is a lot of wbc, and could indicate chlamydia.  Please follow up with testing as cipro is not a medication used to treat chlamydia.

Oops - sorry again.  I need to stop and think before I hit the post button, huh?

So you only had unprotected oral?  That would make it not chlamydia, but could be gonorrhea.  Cipro can cure that.  If you test in 2 weeks, your test for gonorrhea might still be positive, but if you took the cipro, the test might just be picking up on dead gonorrhea DNA, so retest at a month to make sure its gone.

Does that make sense?  I hope so.

You might also call your doctor and tell him the truth, and see if the lab still has the specimen to test for gonorrhea.  That could save you a lot of headache and retesting, etc.

To: Thanks to AuntJessi
I also posted this in the Doctors forum if you are interested in the docs answer.  I told my doctor everything in an email yesterday - waiting for her reply.  I think it was NGU.  My wife was tested for STD by her Gyn and was negative and I have abstained from sex with her until this is cleared up.  She is returning from a trip tomorrow.
