Follow up for Dr HHH

Not sure that Dr Handsfield will answer but will try anyway as related to this thread.

This thread says that levaquin is active against both chlamydia and gonorrhea.  But the original post is from 2005.  It's five years later and I'm wondering if your advice has changed.  I understand that gono has grown resistant to this type of antibiotic treatment but was really wondering if levaquin will have any effect on gonorrhea. Now...in 2010.  Also wondered about these resistant strains of gono.  In particular, what percentage of MSM cases are of the resistant strain that now is present throughout the U.S.?

My personal situation is this:  received oral from a man (I'm male too) and noticed a sting (just once) after urination and then proceded to urinate frquently. Happened maybe two days after the encounter. No other symptoms...and believe me...I watched for discharge like a hawk.  For five days I monitored myself closely and only noticed the frequent urination.(anxiety..I know)  I did one time notice a clear pre-Cum like substance after peeing but its never been anything constant.

I have had unrelated "urinary system" issues in the past so I went to the Dr to check it out.  He did urine culture (clear of any findings) but put me on levaquin for 7 days (500mg once a day).  I've taken it for five days and still have just the frequency issue.  (Probably just due to anxiety) still no "overt" discharge or "passing razors" type pain that I've heard about gonorrhea in ten days on and off the drug.

So ultimately my question is really about whether floroquinolins (sp?) Especially levaquin have any affect on gonorrhea these  days.  Also would like to hear Dr Handsfields opinions on gonorrhea as an incurable super bug.  Of course would love to hear his opinions on my personal situation but am more interested in his take on drug resistance.  If not for me then for all that read this board.  It may inspire others to be more open about possible exposures with their healthcare providers.

Hoping for response from Dr HHH.  Appreciate the invaluable advice you give on this website.  Expert is an understatement for you.

Thanks Vance.  Totally understand your stance on medicine advice.  I read on your profile an  article on resistant gonorrhea.  Any other sources or info on the subject that  ur aware of?  The subject interests me.  I don't think that most drs especially GPs know much about this subject of drug resistance.  Most people my age still talk about a shot pennicillin in the butt.  Seems times are changing and the word doesn't really get out.

No he will nto respond unless you pay to ask it.

I do not know about medication, and even if I did I would not give advice pertaining to it because someone might see it and self medicate and we never endorce that,so I can't really answer that question for you.

I can tell you that without discharge (90%) of men get and the rarity of gonorrhea from oral sex...I would not worry about it.

Understood.  Question was in response to an expert forum thread.  Will he respond to that.  Meanwhile...you seem to have a lot of insight on these subjects.  Any thoughts from you?

You have to pay to post in the Expert forum for a Dr to answer.
