Foreskin Irritation

Hi,
Several times over the last couple years I've experienced foreskin irritation. the foreskin and the area underneath it becomes reddened, and I feel a very light burning sensation on the reddened areas. The irritated areas are not spots or sores, and the redness just seems to fade in and out of visibility. In other accounts I have read, dryness accompanied the irritation, but in my case the opposite appears to be true. The red irritated areas seem more moist than usual. Sometimes the glans seems mildly irritated as well. Sometimes the irritation is associated with a sudden lapse in proper hygiene, but not always. The irritation usually lasts for a week and a half or two weeks.
I had a full series of STD tests done, and the only thing that came back of interest was a HerpeSelects HSV1 result of .93 - equivocal, but my doctor assured me that that almost surely meant a negative result.
I am now worried that perhaps the irritation is some kind of symptom of a asymptomatic case of herpes, and I was wondering if that was possible. And if it isn't that, what could it be, and how should it be treated?

Thank you

thanks. balanitis sounds about right, but from what i read it can have many different different causes. is there any clear way to determine if an infection is fungal or bacterial or neither?

Hi there -

Have you heard of balanitis?  Its a fungal infection, and your symptoms sound similar.  You should google it, and see your doctor.

If you are concerned about herpes, have your doctor do a type specific IgG blood test on you.
