Gardnerella should I be getting treated?

Hi,

hope someone can help me here. 2 weeks ago I had unprotected intercourse with a nightclub worker in Poland. 24 hours later I had a terrible sore throat which passed after 2 days. I went to the doctor for a full set of STD tests and everything came back negative except Gardnerella. The doctor has gave me flagyl 500g twice daily for 10 days.

Few questions I have is
1. I thought men shouldn't be treated for this?
2. Would this be related has I have seen that it is not an Std
3. 10 days seems excessive I have read treatment should be 5 to 7 days

thanks for the help

Gardnerella can be treated, though it isn't necessary.  If you are having any genital symptoms, take the meds.

We don't know a lot about this in men, but I suppose in theory, you could pass this to a woman, so treating might be a good idea.

If you continue with the meds, do not drink any alcohol.  It can make you very sick.

That is up to you. We don't provide medical advice on this forum.

All I can tell you is that from what little I have read the bacteria seems to be benign. And I never heard of it increasing the risk for HIV.

Thanks joggen.

Should I just finish the course since I already started? My main worry is passing on to my partner. What do u think??

Also I read that this bacteria can increase the risk of HIV? Do you more about that? I will wait 6 weeks and get tested, pretty worried as u can imagine.

Thanks

Your sore throat is not related to any STD and you are correct that you do not need to be treated for Gardnerella.

For me information please review the following threads from the STD Expert forum.
