Genital HSV 2 and Oral HSV 2

by Logan 55, Oct 22, 2007 07:40PM
I had unprotected sex with a girl about 6 times over the course of the weekend....about 2 days after i had several bumps all over my penis....most of them were just red and a few had some white on them...i went and seen the doctor and he told me they were just ingrown hairs that were infected...I never got tested for herpes but 17 days after my sex encounter I woke up in the middle of the night with a really bad itch and the next morning I had a large white blister on my penis...he said it might be herpes but gave me a blood test...the blood test was pos for HSV 1 and neg for HSV 2...i later found out that sometimes that blood tests arent accurate till around the three month mark?...How long does it really take for a a blood test to detect antibodies in the blood??...after three months my blood test was still neg HSV 2 and pos HSV 1...could this mean my sore was caused by HSV - 1...secondly...a few days after getting my blood test back from the three month test the same girl that i had sexual encounters with gave me  a kiss while she had a cold sore...she later told me that she was positive for HSV 2 genitally...not sure about orally...I was very paranoid and begin licking my lips for weeks...its been three weeks now and I have not had any visible sores on the out side of my lips...but i have had lots on the inside of my mouth ...very small sores and one larger on that is just a big bump on the inside of my lip...it hasnt gone away for those three weeks...could this be a possible HSV -2 Oral infection...and how long would I have to wait to know if it is...and if a blood test comes back positive can i be certain that it is just a oral infection and not genital because I got tested three months after my last sexual encounter?? And if it is a oral HSV 2 infection what are my chances of transmission and shedding the virus without symptoms??

I am just wondering if you got tested for other possible STDs? Also, herpes usually shows up pretty quickly (approx.2-20 days) ....but You must realize and I think that you do HSV1 and HSV2 can both be oral or genital.... But in order for you to get HSV2 orally from a partner who has it genital area you must have preformed oral sex on her... and the best way to know if your genital problem is HSV2 you need to be seen by the doctor at the time of the outbreak you can do that my calling your doctor and telling them you need to be seen ASAP! I hope this helps

Being negative for hsv2 3 months after the encounter makes it likely that you don't have hsv2.  I also highly doubt you have it orally too. To greatly simplify it - hsv2 doesn't "like" the oral area so it rarely infects there.  Since your hsv1 was positive a little over 2 weeks after the encounter it's likely that you had hsv1 orally since before you met this gal.  Her kissing you with a cold sore isn't an issue since you already have hsv1 yourself.

So use this as a learning experience.  use condoms unless you've seen the std test results of a partner yourself to know what they have and don't have.  ASK if they know if they have a std or if they've ever had any.  Don't just assume that if they had something they'd tell you.  If you are going to continue to be sexual with this gal - ask her if she'd be willing to go on daily suppressive therapy to help lower your risk of contracting the virus from her. Her being on suppressive therapy with valtrex and you using a condom would make you very unlikely to contract hsv2 from her.

If your mouth lesions don't heal up within the next week - see your doctor. You very well might have a bacterial or fungal infection both orally and genitally that just isn't clearing up on its own or something going on.
