Genital warts treated 4 times, keep coming in other area, frustrated

Doc,

1st of all I wanted to thank you for your prior replies on my concerns.

I've just had my HIV anti body test and it came out negative, the result says "non reactive",(11 weeks from last exposure) and Im happy about it..... Thanks a lot.

Now for my frustrating concern..... Me and my fiance have genital warts and was treated for more than 3 times already..... but it keeps growing on other areas..... No sign of relapse on the former lesions... But it gets very frustrating..... It really hurts being burnt.....

Should we carry on the treatment?  Will it just grow on other areas forever?  Can we still have a normal life?  Any medical advice for us to have a strong immune system?  Am getting frustrated already and I can't even tell the difference between warts, glands and hair folicle anymore, as long as i see a small lump..... it registers as a wart in my head immediately..... I really want to lead a normal life, me and my fiance's supposed to be getting married this year..... but genital warts changes everything..... and I'm afraid that she might even have cervical problems..... I worry more for her than myself...

11 weeks is enough time to tell me that im HIV negative, yes?

Thanks doc.....

This forum is not available for unending questions that you should be asking your own health care provider.  You don't have penile cancer.  I haven't a clue how to influence your fiance's treatment decisions.

This thread is over.

Thanks for the replies.....

Im now concerned with penile cancer, I have 4 small lumps (2 on each side of the head along with small glands) in the inner part of the head of my penis, my dermatologist claims it to be glands...

How can I tell if it's a symptom for penile cancer?

To Doc HHH, sir, i'm from the Philippines, Manila... Can you provide me with some information where I can go to for a thorough diagnosis and proper treatment..... I dont know if freezing and other treatment you mentioned is available here in the Philippines.  I'll be taking your advice to get another opinion...

To Sir Englishman, I'll take your advice sir... I'll try to be patient.....

How can I make my fiance use aldara?  She's not aware of the wonder of the drug, and her doctor told her that she cannot apply aldara in her vaginal wall? is that true?

It must be frustrating but since the outbreak was last october (i.e. recent) you will probably need to wait longer. It took 8 months for my molluscum to go away. The treatments only help with the visible symptoms (warts), the underlying HPV infection which causes the warts will eventually be overcome by your immune system (likely within a year and almost certainly within 2 years). From all that I have read, TIME is the most important factor, followed by diet, smoking and environmental factors (the last 3 of which are controversial/not proven). There seems to be a consensus that time is the most important thing and therefore you may have to be patient. Getting a second opinion from another doctor is always a good idea.

Best of luck.

Your fiance really should try Aldara as it works in a different way to just getting them taken off, it uses your bodies immune system. If used carefully and correctly it is wonderful stuff, it has worked well on me.I got them frozen off first aswell, but as they returned for the first 5 months my Gyno soon put me onto something else that did work (Aldara).  I have been told by my sexual Health provider to quite smoking also. It cant hurt to keep healthy and stress free to help your body fight it.

Quitting smoking definitely is good for your health, but isn't likely to make any difference in resolution of your warts.

Most providers do not rely primarily on cautery.  Not only is it the most painful approach, but probably no more effective than freezing, podofilox (Condylox), or imiquimod (Aldara).  It certainly generates the maximum income for the provider, however, by a large margin.

Doc HHH,

The procedure was called caultery?  Burned the warts and scrape it off...

My fiance was put to sleep and was caulterize too... because she had warts in her vaginal walls..... but both doctors said that we have small warts compared to other patients...

The area treated was ok... but warts grows on other areas.....

Thanks Doc... I'll follow your advice and carry on with the program...

I've quitted smoking last november... my fiance is slowly quitting... maybe 5 - 6 sticks a week?

Quitting from smoking helps, yes?

Thanks again Doc HHH and Sir Englishman,
pardon my english

Thanks englishman...

Well, We had warts last october 2006, was treated November 2006... again on Dec 2006 and Was treated again the same month, again this month..... Januray 2007...

Small warts keep growing on the untreated areas..... We have different doctors... I went to a dermatologist and she went to an obigynie to get treated..... But I think both doctors used the same procedure..... The warts were burned...

But I apply Aldara on the treated area after the open wound heals, as my dermatologist advised me...

My fiance refused to apply Aldara after treatment... because her doctor didn't recommend it...

It's getting frustrating... spend money, time and it really hurts..... I really don't mind spending for our treatment and we don't mind the scars and pain... I just want to be normal again... Now we're in fear of cervical cancer too.....

You do not say how long you have had genital warts for. As far as I am aware, treatment can be frustrating but over long enough time (2 years) wart outbreaks usually stop and if not, rarely reoccur.

It takes an expert dermatologist to tell the difference between a very small cyst, wart, fordyce gland etc. If you check all the time(and too closely) you will develop an obsessive disorder (I nearly did!). I would talk through a range of treatments with my doctor since different treatments work better with different people. I am not a doctor, but thats my view, from what I have read. Good luck.

Sorry, I cannot help further.  Sometimes it takes up to 10 treatments to clear up genital warts, and some people just take longer to clear warts than others.  Still others respond better to some wart treatments than others.  You don't say what treatment was prescribed, but it might be time to try something else.  Or maybe you have something other than warts.

None of this has anything to do with the strength of your immune system, and there are no medications that can boost immunity in a way that will help.  You need to keep with the program and follow the advice of the provider taking care of the problem.  Or if you don't trust his or her expertise, get a second opinion.

A negative test 11 weeks after exposure is 100% proof against HIV infection.

Good luck--  HHH, MD
