I am perplexed about this article in medhelp from 2010 about a 29 year-old asking Dr. Handsfield if he should get the Guardasil vaccine.
The doctor's response was: "A final consideration that applies more to men than women: Remember that almost all HPV infections are entirely harmless to men heterosexual men. There is value in immunizing men to help prevent cervical and other cancers in women, and also in protecting gay men against anal cancer. But you will gain little if any measurable health protection personally by being immunized. 1) My guess is that you have already been infected with at least 2 or 3 and very possibly all 4 of the Gardasil types and both the Cervarix types. If I were in your situation, I wouldn't get immunized."
I wanted to ask a question for that thread, but it's closed. Maybe someone can help me here. Do you think it's true that the average male over 30 have been infected with the low risk strands too? Wouldn't that mean they have had genital warts in the past and have passed it on to many women? The high risk strands I can understand, but I never thought that many guys have been infected with the low risk strains unless they might've played the field before and/or are much older and never married. I recently tested positive for low risks on a pap smear. Most doctors' offices don't offer that test, so I had to find a special place for that after getting a positive for the high risks. I don't have symptoms so far, but i surely feel like damaged goods knowing that I tested positive after never having an STD up to now. I'm shocked about single guys already having been affected by the low strains, so that they don't need Guardasil. Comments or more information on this would be helpful! Has the typical, nice, single guy who may have dated here and there really been infected with a low strain in the past? I imagine anyone should get Guardasil to protect themselves against the low strains since people don't normally get tested for that unless they have symptoms.
