Many doctors are starting to automatically test for HPV if you are over 30. Doesn't matter if you're single or married. You should ask your doctor to test you just in case. My insurance paid for my test and I don't remember the doctor asking me if it was ok to do the test, she just did it. The cost for an HPV test is around $80 to $100.
Grace, do you have any thoughts?
Is there a particular reason you want to be tested for HPV? Honestly, just about everyone who's had more than a couple of partners will have had at least one strain. Besides, the pap smear itself checks for any precancerous cervical changes that are due to HPV--and as far as I'm concerned, that's the only point to testing...
No particular reason...but what's your experience? Did the gyn run an HPV test in addtion to the regular pap?
Each doctor does it differently. Some clinics are using the thin prep pap test no matter what a woman's age is and some are just poo poo'ing the whole idea of telling a woman they have hpv before they've had cervical cell changes and aren't doing routine hpv testing at all. The best thing to do is to talk to your gyn before you get your pap ( or if you recently had one give them a call and ask what kind you had done ). Let them know why you are asking and if you are concerned about high risk hpv for whatever reason - ask to be tested. Some clinics only report back if high risk hpv is detected - they don't report low risk hpv so be sure to ask what your clinic's policy is. Also if you are 26 or younger ask about getting the hpv vaccine too :)

Grace, what's a thin prep pap? Is it used for hpv dna testings?
The thin prep test is a newer type of pap test that is more accurate than older versions of the pap test and also can detect hpv. You can google it for more info - I"m pretty sure they have a website.
