HPV

Doctor.

I am so sad to say that I have been contracted HPV/genital warts around my anus. I am a heterosexual male. 22 years of age. I never had any skin to skin contact down there but it doesn't matter now.

I have started therapy treatment by freezing the warts off. I have to do a follow up every 2 weeks.

I am so lost.

Having HPV how much does this effect my lifestyle?
Can I still have a girlfriend or even have sex or get married and have kids in my life?
How contagious am I?
Can my girlfriend get infected with this if we were to have regular protected intercourse sex if she were to never to touch or reach my infected side on my anus?

Can this virus be cured? I'm not asking can it be treated but CURED?

I have read that 80-90% of people's body immune system suppress the virus and totally eliminating it making them not contagious ever again. Is this true?

Will I ever be normal before all of this have happen to me?

The topic of HPV and genital warts is a complex one.  I will try to provide some facts.  For additional information on this most common of STDs, I would suggest search for other HPV- and wart-related Q&A on this site, as well seeking addition information on sites such as the American Social health Association web-site (disclosure, Dr. Handsfield and I are both on the Board of ASHA)..

You may have HPV and this concerns you.  It should not.  For better or worse, at present HPV is a "fact of life" and most people have it or will have it at some point in the future.  Despite this fact, only a tiny minority of persons with HPV get the consequences of infection (primarily women and primarily cancer and pre-cancerous lesions).  HPV is the most commonly acquired STD.  Over 85% of sexually active women will have HPV infection at some time in their lives.  The figure for men is less well studied but similar.   In some HPV will cause genital warts, in others it will not cause warts but may lead to changes in PAP smears.  In nearly everyone who gets HPV, warts or otherwise, the infections will resolve by themselves without therapy in 8-24 months.  In a very small minority of women, HPV infection can persist and lead to the pre-cancerous lesions that PAP smears detect and which can then be treated.  For men there is far less risk of any sort.  With this as background, let's address your questions:

1 HPV need not effect your lifestyle
2.  Of course you can still have a girlfriend, wife, and get married and have normal children
3.  Hard to say.  Now that the warts are being treated, not very infectious.
4.  Your girlfirend is probably already infected
5.  Yes they can be cured.
6.  See above, most HPV infections will eliminate themselves

After our last extended exchange I will not repeat that.  You should talk with the doctor who is treating you and/or go to the website mentioned above for additional information.

Take care.  EWH

I never had any sexual contact with this girlfriend I have.I hope to God nothing has happen to her because of me.

Can I transmit HPV to my girlfriend by kissing or french deep kissing?

Understand that the virus can be cured/eliminated within 8-24 months, what do I have to do? Change eating habits? Be more physical active? Rest more?

No, HPV in the rectum cannot be transmitted by lissing on the mouth of any sort.

Just work with your doctor for treatment.  EWH

My last encounter was sept 22. I tested negative blood and oral on oct 23.

I'm very worried and scared sir.

1.  Probably little different.
2.  At 4 weeks a blood test woul detect over 90% of infections acquired 1 month earlier.

You need to stop worrying.  EWH
