HPV?

by jonj1985, Sep 20, 2005 12:00AM
Hello,
I recently developed a small red bump right above the base of my penis about a month and a half ago.It hasn't grown all that much. It has a similar circumference to the end of a #2 pencil eraser. The skin is waxy in appearance, and is very firm. It feels as if there is a rock imbedded under my skin. I have squeezed it hard and a tiny bit of pus came out, but that can be from a near by follicle. I have tried putting hydrocortizone cream on it recently, but it doesn't appear to be helping. I have searched the internet for possible culprits, and the only thing I found was HPV or molluscum. At the time that it first appeared I hadn't had oral sex or sex for about 3 months. Do you have any insight as to what this may be?

Sounds like it could be molluscum contagiosum, especially the "waxy" description.  However, MC usually is better described as being "on" the skin, not "embedded", and generally there are several lesions.  There often is a dimple in the center.  Alternatively, it could be a pimple, infected sebaceous cyst, or ingrown hair.  Stop the hydrocortisone (if it's an infection, the steroid can make it worse) and see a health care provider if it persists.

You can search the forum for "molluscum" or "molluscum contagiosum" to see other threads with lots of information about it.

Good luck--  HHH, MD

hey, sorry but I forgot to include some information. It seems the cortizone cream has made the skin more red. It also seems there is a tiny black dot (more likely a hole from squeezing, but I can't see that well) in the center of bump that is almost microscopic. Also, the "rock" under the skin does not feel perfectly circular as if its filled with a liquid. One side feels like it tapers off into a tail-like ending (but I could be mistakig that observation). Also, today I squeezed with alot of force and blood came out, but I think that is because my nail punctured the skin.

does that rule out HPV for the most part (having the rock-like feeling)?

This doesn't sound at all like HPV.  In any case, it is useless to try to get any more accurate understanding of the diagnosis online, either from me or any other website.  See a health care provider.
