HSV 1 Genital

by IMoverTHIS1, Jun 23, 2007 12:00AM
I appreciate all the help I can get.

I had unprotected sex with my girlfriend in November.  Less that a week later I get this pain and rash (red) under the shaft of my penis and a red rash on top of the shaft.  I never had any classic symptoms of white ulcers. But my scrotum continues to stay bright red and itch badly at times.  She then tells me she swabbed pos for HSV.  We had IGG blood tests confirm type 1 and not type 2.  Since November, I have never been relieved of any symptoms.  They may go dormant for a week but no longer. I feel everytime we have sex I will get a rash.  I have been to an infectious disease DR and he said yeast.  My girlfriend gets a little cut by the orifice and says it hurts but nothing like her first OB. Her OBGYN the other day said that cut isnt herpes.  And she says it doesnt look like it either.  Now the rash is where my thigh and legs meet and in the perineum.  I am using the cream BID and havent used it enough for significant results.  We also get matching little cuts in the top of our buttocks where the crack comes to an end.  This problem has been going on for 7 solid months and the red rash is only around the base of my penis and never any ulcers.  It hurts badly when we continue to have sex.  Does this sound like HSV to you?  4 Doctors swear it doesnt look like it.  Can it vary so much they wouldnt be able to tell?

I agree 100% with the 4 doctors you have seen.  Herpes doesn't behave the way you describe and is not a possible cause of your symptoms and the blood test results prove it isn't the cause of your symptoms.  Sounds like a chemical or allergic reaction of some sort, or perhaps a yeast or fungal infection.  One or more of your primary care doctors should be able to sort it out, but I cannot.

I'm confused by the statement about a positive HSV swab.  I can't even tell whether it came from you or your partner.  (Does 'she' refer to your partner or one of the doctors?) Either way, all other evidence is so strongly against herpes that I have to assume you or your partner misunderstood that information.  You should clarify it with the doc who did that test.

In any case, put herpes out of your mind as a cause of your symptoms.  No chance.

Good luck--  HHH, MD

She tested positive only for HSV 1 with IGG testing.  She was swabbed and the culture test said isolated. THis was done in April 2006. I have tested positive only for HSV 1 with IGG test.  Is it possible she could have genital hsv1 and I do not?  How much do symptoms of HSV vary?

Thank you

Her blood test shows your partner has been infected with HSV-1 but you still provide confusing information about the culture.  Is a word missing?  "Isolated" or "not isolated"? If it was isolated, she has genital herpes due to HSV-1.  If not, then her infection probably is oral.

Regardless of what your partner has, you don't have infection with either HSV type and your genital symptoms are not due to herpes.  If you continue in a sexual relationship with her, there is some risk you will catch genital herpes someday, from either vaginal or anal sex.  But that has not happened yet.

Symptoms of herpes vary widely.  Read any of several reliable websites for details, such as www.metrokc.gov/health/apu/std, www.ashastd.org, or www.westoverheights.com.
