HSV1

Throughout this forum you have said that if you have HSV2 without symptoms the virus can still be passed. How does that work with HSV1? Can you only transmit the virus if you have an obvious cold sore? Are all bumps on lips HSV1, or can other 'things' (dry lips..etc) cause bumps?

Thank you.

Asymptomatic oral shedding of HSV-1 has note been very well studied.  In general, it is less common than genital asymptomatic shedding with HSV-2.  But it occurs, and sometimes HSV-1 transmitted to other persons by individuals who have no overt cold sores.

No, not all bumps on the lips are due to HSV-1.  However, red bumps that turn into blisters or pimple-like lesions, or that develop a scab, and then heal over 7-10 days, should be considered oral herpes until proven otherwise.  Herpes is especially likely if the problem keeps coming back in more or less the same spot.
