HSV2 test @ .97

Hey everyone!  During the last week of Dec 2007 I briefly dated a guy.  First date we kissed and touched eachothers' genitals. Second date during the first week of Jan 2008 we kissed, I gave him unprotected oral (not to orgasm), and we shared genital frotage for a moment.  After these two dates we never went out again.  Later during the last week of Jan 2008 he called me to tell me he had his first genital Herpes outbreak and that I should get tested.  I have not heard from him since and consequently do not know if he tested positive for either type I or type II.

Naturally I went to the clinic during the second week of Feb 2008 for a full STD workup.  I did not have them run a test for HSV1 as I have had a cold sore maybe once a year since I was a small child.  Even though my exposure was very recent I did have them run a HSV2 blood test to find out if I had possibly infected him.  The nurse said it was similar to the Herpeselect though she couldn't put her finger on the exact name.  All tests came back negative, including the HSV2 which came back negative at ≤.9  So far so good.

During the time period since then I have been celibate.  No sex of any variety, no kissing, no genital contact, nada.  I don't think anyone else has even seen me naked since then lol.  I also have had no symptoms or indications of HSV2.  As my initial HSV2 test was done so soon after my exposure, I recently had another test done September 3, 2008.  The results came back at .97, within the equivocal range.  The nurse who called me with my results informed me that I likely had a developing infection and that there were medications and treatments available.  Of course I was very concerned and came home and began researching any info I could find on the test.

My question is, given my relatively low equivocal test result of .97 a good 8 months after the exposure and the fact that I have HSV1, is it worth getting a Western Blot?  For my peace of mind and as a courtesy to others I will get tested again.  The Biokit is not available in my area so it is down to the Herpeselect-type test and the Western Blot.  Any input or comments would be appreciated.  Thanks!  (I really need to call the clinic again to see if another nurse knows the name of the test I took lol...)

That's the way I am feeling about the whole thing too.  If nothing else this has definitely given me a crash course about the fact that though HSV2 can be an occasional nuisance, too many people get caught up in the whole social stigma of a std whose reputation is worse than actual condition itself in many cases.  Thanks Grace!  *huggles*

You've covered your own hsv2 bases. Equivocal 8 months after possible infection is negative. No need for any further testing from this encounter last feb due to hsv2.

As for the fellar from then - he's obviously not too concerned that he never told you which type he had and didn't seem to want to know what your own status is. Perhaps he knew he had genital herpes prior to you meeting him, didn't plan on ever telling you and then had an ob and felt guilt and said what he said?

I hope I didn't give him anything other than a good time BUT if I did give him type 1 I think that may be the best case scenario.  From what I have read most type 1 genital cases rarely have further outbreaks after the initial one.  According to www.herpesonline.org "It is estimated that herpes simplex 1 now accounts for as many as 30% of all genital herpes cases in the U.S. and 2-5% of the recurring outbreaks are associated with the herpes type 1 virus."  In otherwords, if one has type 1 genital herpes, the chance of continued outbreaks after the initial signs are signifigantly lower than with type 2.  Doesn't change the fact that one has herpes, it is just physically less of a nuissance.

That's ok.

Its quite possible that you gave him genital herpes type 1 from giving him oral sex.  His doctor might have said that it was type 2 simply because it was genital, and that's not always accurate.

If you still talk to him, and really want to know, have him get a type specific IgG blood test and find out what type he has.

If you have any more questions, see the herpes forum.
