HTLV Window Period

What is the window period for HTLV conclusive test. Most people say body produces antibody between 20 -90 days.
And on HPA site it says Anti-HTLV testing (window period of 45 days, test sensitivity of 98%, error frequency of 0.1%). Alos blood bank uses 51 days.
There is no clear information on conclusive window period like HIV?

Please share if anyone has a clear information.

Thanks Grace, hope ill be able to figure out whats causing my ailment very soon.It is very difficult to find doctor who is willing to speak on HTLV. I am working with my infectious disease specialist, he isint very much keen to discuss further on HTLV, cuz my test keeps repeting negative uptill and wants me to let this all go and move on.
I have read that people seroconvert as late as 11 months to 2 years.
And my symptoms are so specific i keep thinking this every time.
Also it is very funny people write on HTLV without knowing 95% asymptomatic, low risk of developing serious disease but Living with it very difficult it give multiple problem for people living with it.

Hello Do you mean that it takes 11 months to 2 years to find the antibodies to HTLV?

Did you ever find out what it was after so many neg tests. I have had similar issues & worry re HTLV post sexual exposure. Tested for everything (sexual) which are all neg (all standard STI inc HTLV at 6 months & HIV upto 5 1/2 months)Blood work galore within range or normal. Normal inflamation markers & immune function normal with no sign of auto immune issues, CT scan / MRI scan / synacthen testing/ colonoscopy also normal. Though have red eyes, muscle spasms, receding gums & inconstant bowel movements these have improved having had a whole host of issues that developed post exposure. Weight dropped from 12 stone 8, to below 12 but back up at about 12.5. Also seem to have regained some muscle size / tone. Something not right though.

Symptoms appear as they do in hiv infection but seem to last a lot longer and aids defining illnesses can also occur such as wasting syndrome and oral thrush

Yeah. I've been kind of freaking out about this as well. Got an anti-body test 4.5 months after unprotected sex. It was negative. That was 2 months ago. Should I get tested again?

This is a very interesting post. so you think it is very reliable info?

For everyone, I would like to know if we get frequent urination a day or two after receiving an unprotected oral from a sex worker and protected vaginal can be considered as an HTLV infection. and if symptoms appear they last for how long?

I am planning to get tested, it will be at 19 weeks

Thanks

I haven't heard much of htlv. I just found out they test for it in the U.S. blood banks. It seems its sexually transmitted.
I been tested for hiv but never for htlv, I don't think they offer that testing at the clinics.
Just wondering how infectious is it? Is it easily transmitted? What is more easily transmitted hiv or htlv?

How do you know that you are infected with HTLV?

Most people who are infected with HTLV are unaware of their infection as they are perfectly well.

These people are known as 'asymptomatic carriers', as they are infected, but have no signs or symptoms related to their infection.

HTLV infection can be detected by a specific blood test. This blood test detects HTLV antibodies that the body will produce shortly after becoming infected with HTLV, in order to fight the infection.

Infection with HTLV is lifelong, so the presence of HTLV antibodies shows that someone is infectious. The absence of HTLV antibodies means that a person is not infected, unless the infection has only just occurred and the test was done before the body had time to makeantibodies against the infection. If a recent infection is suspected, the blood test should be repeated three months later.

Htlv specialist london sent me this

. Please note that the window period post exposure or HTLV is 3-4 months (12 to 17 weeks). It seems that you have tested negative out of the period. Also it is important to know that HTLV-associated diseases do not usually manifest for many years after acquiring the infection. It is therefore highly unlikely that the symptoms you are experiencing are related to the HTLV virus.

I have extracted this information from our website which will hopefully answer your question further;

What is the window period after infection before antibody tests for HTLV infection are always positive?

1.         The best published data are from Angela Manns and co-authors 1992 paper published in the journal ‘Blood’1. They repeatedly tested blood transfusion recipients who had been transfused with HTLV-1 infected blood with an enzyme linked Immunosorbent assay (EIA) which used HTLV proteins obtained by breaking up the whole virus). The EIA had become positive at a median of 53 days (i.e. half of all the recipients were shown to be infected with HTLV had a positive EIA at 53 days.

2.         Using the screening assay 2/3 of infected recipients had antibodies to HTLV-1 detected by day 64 following exposure and all infected recipients had antibodies to HTLV-1 detected by day 110 following exposure.

3.         However in the confirmatory assay, (a ‘western blot’ in which different virus proteins are separated on a test strip allowing antibodies to the different proteins to be distinguished – this shows as a band on the strip), all infected transfusion recipients had a least one detectable band at 55 days (8 weeks) with a band first detected in half the recipients as early as 40 days (6 weeks).

4.         These data were used to estimate the seroconversion window period by Schrieber and colleagues in their 1996 New England Journal of Medicine paper estimating the risk of transmission of HTLV-1 by a blood donor infected with HTLV-1 donating blood during the window period2. They estimated the window period to be 55 days (range 38 – 72).

5.         A more conservative range would be out to the midpoint between the last negative and first positive results from the Manns paper i.e. (38 – 96.5 days).

6.         The screening tests used to check for antibodies to HTLV are better today than they were 20 years ago, using recombinant proteins to make then both very sensitive and very specific. (This means they are very good at detecting antibodies when they are present and have a very low rate of false positive results).

What should I do if I have a negative antibody HTLV test result and am still worried?

1)         Most seroconversions have occurred within 8 weeks of exposure.

2)         If the time of definite exposure (e.g. unprotected sexual intercourse with a known HTLV-1 carrier) is known to be less than 90 days then a repeat antibody test performed after this period is the most reliable test.

3)         If the infection status of the sexual partner is not known and the test was performed more than 60 days after possible exposure, further testing is not considered to be helpful.

Hi @Jamesearl. Can you please give me the details of the Htlv specialist you spoke with? I need to contact someone regarding symptoms I’m having. Thank you.

continue to follow up with your medical providers as needed. An infectious disease specialist would be the best follow up at this point.

don't get fixated on a std causing your symptoms either. Most times it isn't, just takes awhile to figure out what is going on.

best of luck and I hope you get answers and relief soon :)

Jessijsmes, what makes u believe that htlv is not an std?
Do u know it is a retrovirus like HIV and was found before HIV. reaserch on htlv remains ignored and people living with it neglected.
No mention of this virus exists to general public.
Govt and medical comps are successful in sweeping this disease under the rug past 35 years, hence we have more than 35 mm leaving with this virus worldwide.

Hello

So HTLV is not an STD.   We mostly know of STD here.

BUT From the medical literature...

It appears that testing only once is of "high efficiency".  Meaning that you don't need  to test again.

There is no one to answer this mistry question cuz there is no enough reaserch on this neglected disease past 35 years. Suffering due to htlv are like full blown aids. Bladder dysfunction, weakness, uveites, weight loss, muscle mass reduction.spinal cord pain, pheripiral neurology. More than 25mm people infected but no single drug or proper info till date.

Thanks for answering to my question.
I had this exposure almost 3 months now. i have all symptoms of HTLV. But my antibody test over 2 months is negative.
I read on some site they say antibodys are produced between 20-90 days of exposure, Blood bank take 51 days as window period. There is no robust or conclusive answer for this.on some HTLV site it says the test needs be repeated after 3 months of initial test if symptoms continues.
Like how long should one continue testing to find infection?

thank you for providing that info.

I think the general consensus is like hiv - if you test negative after 3 months, no reason for more testing.

any particular reason why you are concerned?
