HTLV

I was recently tested for HTLV I and II. My test came back negative except for P24 which came back reactive, faint band. The test was not considered to have a positive result but my Dr wants me to get retested at another lab just to double check. I am HIV neg. I have donated blood many times and more recently then when this test was done and I have never been contacted regarding HTLV or any other issues that would make me a bad blood donor. Is this something I should be concerned about? What is the implication for the reactivity on P24? Thanks so much!

HTLV infections aren't considered STDs.  Although the viruses sometimes might be sexually transmitted, that has never been proved, and I don't keep up on the issues of HTLV transmission, diagnosis, or any other aspects of those viruses.  The provider who tested you is in the best position to answer your question about the results; or if s/he isn't on top of these issues, ask for referral to an infectious diseases specialists.

Sorry I can't be of more help.

Best wishes--  HHH, MD
