Herpes, leg pain and Cytomegalovirus

I recently tested and found out I had herpes.  I was doing research and found out Cytomegalovirus is a form of herpes.  I had Cytomegalovirus when I was in Jr high and when I was 16 I started having severe leg pain with a painful tingling in my toes.  Shortly after the pain stopped I would have a blistering rash always on the same side of my leg midway up my calf.  It came and went all the time until about a year ago 10 yrs later.

I've never experienced any other outbreaks other than this.  Could this be Genital Herpes and I've had it all along?  Did the Cytomegalovirus have anything to do with this?

I have a young toddler girl and I'm worried she will have it.   any words would help

no cmv is not a std.

if you have been diagnosed with cmv and have questions, this isn't the appropriate forum.

I am confused. Is CMV virus a STD? The doctor just diagnosed me and also used the term monotiter. He is treating me with Valtrex. I have had severe pain in my joints which moves around from one place to another. I have night sweats and fatigue. This has been going on for two and a half months. The doctor thought it was gout, or lymes disease. Finally they got the diagnosis through a blood test. I am relieved but I don't understand how it could be a STD. What can I expect?

the igg blood test doesn't tell you if you are immune to hsv.  If you can call and ask for the results I can take a look at them for you.

Since you were sexually active when all this began - I would assume that it's all hsv2.  If you really need confirmation - next time you get the rash on your leg - go get it cultured for herpes and typed.  Avoid sex whenever you do have the rash because you are most likely also shedding the virus from the anogenital area at the same time.  You are also periodically shedding it from there in between obvious ob's too.  It's not shingles - shingles wouldn't reoccur like this.  When you have lesions on your legs - keep them covered until healed.

Thanks! I was tested by blood for herpes 1 & 2.  I'm immune to 1 (or have antibodies) and tested positive to 2 (the dr didn't give me these #'s).  I've never had an outbreak other than the leg thing.

Yes, I was sexually active at that age.  What got me thinking about the leg was different msg boards where people said they had these sorts of pains before an outbreak.  Then I was looking at pictures of outbreaks from hsv2 and one photo looked just like the blisters I see on my leg.  I'd been told by one dr she thought it sounded like shingles on my leg.

Anyway, we are always looking for reasons things happen....

CMV is incredibly common. Most of us get it at some point.  It doesn't cause herpes simplex and it doesn't cause reoccuring rashes and leg pains.

How were you tested for herpes?  I"m assuming blood test? If so you can post the numeric results for me and I"ll take a look at them for you - ie hsv1 igg 3.4 and hsv2 igg 4.5 or whatever they are.

Had you been sexually active when you were 16 and all these symptoms started?

Oh and no risk to your toddler.
