Herpes and passing it on

I want to first give you a bit of history before I jump into my question. I contracted genital herpes by someone giving me oral sex and I have had the virus now for 3 years. My last break out was a month ago and since then I have not had any further breakouts. Also I started a new pill two weeks ago called acyclovir. Now with that said, I was out with friends over the weekend and of course I drank a little to much, and I ended up staying the night with a guy. He performed oral sex on me and during vaginal sex we used condoms and once or twice with out the use of a condom. I

Yes. The only way to tell for sure is a type-specific blood test. But if you believe you contracted herpes after being given oral sex, it's type 1. Herpes is herpes. It's either genital or oral.  But there are slight differences between the two types when they are found in the body area where they don't normally reside.

It's more difficult to pass on type 1 genitally than orally.  It's way more difficult to pass type 2 orally than genitally.  Type 1 genitally, for most people, doesn't recur nearly as often. But it also doesn't always respond to the antiviral medication. The medication was studied and measured for type 2, and works great for type 2.

A few differences. : )

I think you were fine with this guy. Again, his chances are higher that he has type 1 than that he DOESN'T have it.

If you decide  to get your herpes typed through a blood test, let us know the results. I'd be curious to follow up on this.

Thank you for the insight. I have been worrying about this, this whole week, and your right, He also could be infected too. I have been reading all your notes to everyone, are you in the medical field? You seem very knowledgeable in this field. Thanks again.

Well, his risk is pretty low just because you only had two unprotected encounters with the guy. I wouldn't worry too much about this. Also, you don't even know his herpes status, and it's possible he already has  herpes, orally or genitally, which would give him more protection. Herpes is really common, especially the oral type. There's a greater than 50% chance that he's already infected.
