Herpes or UTI??

by mel088, Jan 14, 2009 07:50PM
Ok so I was tested for all STD's in November, all negative.  I have been in a faithful relationship since then.  I have a history of reoccurent UTI's.  About 2 weeks ago I came down with burning urination, swollen lymph nodes, and a few bumps on my pantyline.  I went in to my OBGYN because the urination was very uncomfortable but actually thought the bumps were from shaving.  My doctor initially suspected herpes but after testing for it, again all of my STD tests were negative.  He says he suspects that I have an infection that is causing the bumps.  After a 5 day antibiotic my burning urination has subsided.  The lesions are getting better by using the vaginal infection cream. My boyfriend was diagnosed with herpes today and now I am worried that I might have been misdiagnosed.  Should I go back AGAIN and get retested after being negative in Nov and December?

How was he diagnosed?   A visual diagnosis is wrong at least 30% of the time.

If he has a lab test - either a conclusive culture or blood test - then you might want to get a blood test done.

How long have you all been together?

Thanks for the quick comment.  he was diagnosed by his doctor.  He has had no symptoms and is very surprised.  We have been together for about 7 months.  I had two blood tests done but have read that they can be false negative.

They can be falsely negative if you test too soon.  It can take up to 4 months to show positive on the blood test.

When he saw his doctor today, did his doctor do any kind of testing at all, or just look at him and say "Yep, its herpes"?

He actually got tested a week ago and just heard from the doc today.  If this is a herpes outbreak, it would be my first one which is why I am worried that I might have tested too soon and it could have been falsely negative.  I guess my answer is Yes I need to go get another opinion but maybe I should wait a bit?

I think you should wait a bit.  You already know its a possibility, and test 6 weeks from now, and if its negative then, test 6 weeks after.
