Herpes results....contradicting? CONFUSED!

by nervous37, Nov 20, 2007 03:17PM
My school doctor called me in after I told her I was scared i had herpes since i had what i believed was an outbreak on my genitals. i got blood tests done and she called me in to tell me that the tests did detect antibodies, but it was a "rough estimate" and we just had to keep an eye out.
i was so confused andfrustrated because she didnt help at all. anyway i got the paper work and this is exactly what the tests results say verbatim.
HERPES SIMPLEX VIRUS TYPES 1&2 IGG [HERPESELECT] & IGM ABS
HSV 1 IgG Antibodies <0.90
HSV 2 IgG Antibodies <0.90

HSV Types 1/2 IgM Abs     Result= See below       reference range = <0.80
Reflexed to IFA test for confirmation of antibody and type specificity

HSV 1 IgM Antibodies IFA         Detected
HSV 2 IgM Antibodies IFA        Detected

Then it goes on to say how this lab used a kit that was not approved by the FDA and all of that. But i've read that IgG are reliable, and IgM are not? So many different things out there, can you please help explain?
Thank you

The igm is not accurate and can not be used for the purpose of diagnosing a newly acquired herpes infection in adults.  disregard those results.

Your igg tests were negative for hsv1 and hsv2. How long after the last time you had sex did you have the blood drawn? If it was less than 3 months then you'll have to wait and repeat your igg blood tests at that time.

Should you get a return of symptoms see your doctor within 24-48 hours of their appearance for a lesion culture and typing.
