Herrpes Help

I have genital herpes - confirmed by culture and blood test.  After initial outbreak, I was prescribed Valtrex to use for a recurrence.  Very bad headaches resulted.  Was discontinued.  With next occurrence, I asked for another anti-viral and was prescribed Acyclovir.  This one caused headaches, backache, confusion and fatigue.  Was stopped.  I am now having a recurrence and didn't take anything.  After about 7 days, I felt it was almost over, then wham....came back with a new leison and flu-like symptoms.  Tried Acyclovir before bed last night, was up most of night with headache.  I haven't taken anything today.  I don't know what to do.  Can anyone help me?

I have no experience with genital herpes, however I do have HSV-1.  I have always take acyclovir when I have a cold sore, and never had too much of an issue with side effects until my last prescription.  They upped my dose from 200 mg to 800 mg (different doctor), and I had all kinds of problems and only ended up taking them for 2 days. After the 2nd day on the 800 mg, my eyes became very irritated and my lips developed a rash and broke out in fordyce spots.  Not sure if it is all a coincidence, but still have the same lip and eye problems 30 days later.

I know ice (applied early on) and l-lysine also help with cold sores, not sure about genital herpes.  If you stay on the acyclovir, I would recommend a low dose even if it takes a few extra days to heal up.
