How Long Does It Take For Chlamydia/Gonorrhea Symptoms To Go Away After Treatment

by daggotht, Jul 19, 2007 09:32AM
So two days ago, my bladder started burning as if someone shoved a welding rod into my urethra and twisted it.

The next morning, I had this disgusting white discharge from the tip of my penis.

Naturally, I consulted a doctor pronto.  I took that single cocktail of antibiotics they give (5 pills).  It's been a little bit more than 12 hour now.  I don't mean to be impatient but I'm wondering when the pain and other symptoms will start going away.

Is it right away?  48h?  Whatever...when should I consult the doctor again because despite the fact that this looks everything like a chlamydia, I still have no idea how I could've got it.

2-3 days for discharge to stop is common, but not a rule.  Lingering sensitivity after that is very common and could last a week or more.  If you seem to take a bit longer, don't panic.  Just continue taking your medication and see how you feel a week after starting treatment.  If you're not markedly better by then, at that point I would revisit the Dr.

By the way, what were you diagnosed with and how as the diagnosis made?  Unfortunately, it's too late to take a very accurate test, but sometimes it's good to know what you are up against.

Also, what does your cocktail consist of?

by daggotht, Jul 19, 2007 12:58PM
All they did is make quick urine tests to check for urinary infection...I think I overheard them say they checked for chlamydia/gonorhea in the urine test but I could be wrong since isn't that done through a swab of culture?

I told them I had severe pain when peeing, I had discharge and they checked me and said the tip of my penis was crusty/irritated.

They gave me two prescription (one for my partner).  Each consisted of two bottles, one with four red pills and one with one large blue pill.  It wasn't pills I had to take regularly, just a one shot.  They told me to swallow all five and wait 7 days for sex or at least remain protected.

I could've gone through more torough testing waited for further results but I'm in Canada so all of this is "free" (medication included) so they told me to take that for now and come back in a week if symptoms persisted.  It all seemed a little botched but they acted as if it was a slam-dunk so I'm assuming they know what they're doing.

by daggotht, Jul 19, 2007 01:01PM
hehe, to be honest i was naively expceting symptoms to dramatically resorb within one hour.  perhaps that was a little too optimistic of me :-)   hopefully, it wasn't something else and all of this will go away asap.  thank you for your feedback.

Chlamydia/gonorrhea can be checked with urine, it's a NAAT (Nucleic Acid Amplification Test), and in fact that's the best way.  However that test would have to be sent out to a lab.  If they did a urinalysis instead, which is immediate, that does not tell you what is causing the infection.   It only shows white blood cells in your urine, which usually indicates infection, but not always.  And it tells you nothing about the nature of the infection.  They should have at least done a swab with a gram stain and looked in the microscope.  That would indicate gonorrhea (or not).

Treating without knowing the cause is unfortunately not a slam dunk, but it does seem like a lot of doctors act that way.

The colors of the pills don't help me much, you need to tell me the antibiotic type and the dosage for me to provide any useful information.

by daggotht, Jul 20, 2007 08:49AM
it was a single dose of 1g of azithromycin.  the others i don't remember.

is it normal that after 48h the pain is still as bad and discharge are worse than they were for starters?

i'm starting to get negative here.

by daggotht, Jul 20, 2007 10:44AM
i called my partner, apparently i took 400 mg of suprax and 250 mg of acithromycin.  (though i remember the pharmacian saying i took 1g)

does that suffice and long will it take to work?

by stillHurting, Jul 20, 2007 02:44PM
To: daggotht
400 mg of suprax is excellent treatment for gonorrhea, if that is what you have.

250 mg of azithromycin is not sufficient to treat other forms of urethritis.  1g will be in some cases, and not in others.  1g is nearly always sufficient  for chlamydia and less so for mycoplasma / ureaplasma.

250mg is an unsual dose, so this was just one pill from a bottle?  Typically they would come in packs of six pills, each 250mg.

by daggotht, Jul 20, 2007 03:18PM
it was one large solid pill.  like a multivitamin.

my partner said 250 mg but i'm sure she read wrong.  i remember the pharmacian saying quite clearly "this is 1g of azithromycin, so it shouldn't be too bad"  i'll see tonight.

assuming i had the correct and usual dosage (1g)...how long!  my penis is discharging almost constantly!  it's disgusting and there's no sign of it slowing down.

should i be patient or consult now?

by stillHurting, Jul 20, 2007 04:11PM
To: daggotht
I'm still going to say, still give it a week before you seek more treatment.  Most antibiotics work not by killing the bacteria (bactericidal), but by inhibiting their growth (bacteriostatic).  This means it's up to the existing bacteria to die and your immune system to clean them out before you're cured.

So my advice for now, be patient.  But do try to verify that you did take 1g azithromycin.

by stillHurting, Jul 20, 2007 04:13PM
To: daggotht
One more thought:  with so much discharge, gonorrhea is more likely.  In that case, there is an excellent chance given your treatment that you will be cured.  Just give it some more time.

by daggotht, Jul 23, 2007 08:49AM
I can confirm I had 1g of azithromycin btw.

I'm entering the 5th day of my treatment.  Bladder irritation is almost gone except for the occasional sting.  The tip of my penis looks a lot more healthy.  However, I still have a lot of discharge.  Maybe a little less frequent but still the same pattern: white in the morning and more constant but transparent in the rest of day.

Is it likely at this point that treament has not worked?  I'm gonna wait for the whole 7 days but I'm worried and would like to know if there are probabilities treatment failed.

Also, how risky is it to perform cullingus on my partner who is also getting treated but showed no symptoms.  Is it low or high risk?  (i did that just last night so i wouldn't assicioate that with the performance of the treatment)

by stillHurting, Jul 23, 2007 12:58PM
To: daggotht
I'd still wait it out for a few days, especially since you are improving.

As to the oral sex risk, if you do in fact have gonorrhea, then it's really unwise to have oral sex.   Chlamydia can also infect the throat though it's less common.  I don't think that would negatively impact your symptom resolution, but you could introduce another infection of your throat which you then need to cure!  The good news is that 5 days later there is a good chance your partner is no longer infectious.  But I would definitely lay off the oral sex for now, protected sex with a condom would be safer until you are both done with your treatment.

I'd also verify which tests they ran on you and the results.  That way, you can retest in a few weeks to ensure the infection is gone.

by daggotht, Jul 25, 2007 09:51AM
I am supposedly done with treatment today.

It's my 7th day.

I checked my boxer shirts this morning, there was still a white stain coming from discharges about the size of a quarter.  Whenever I squeeze my penis, it will discharge a little and I can feel it leaking a little throughtout the day.

The irriation when peeing is also not gone completly.  Especially in the morning, for the first time I urinate.

I think at this point, I can assume antibiotics failed miserably and I have something, no?

by stillHurting, Jul 25, 2007 12:01PM
To: daggotht
That doesn't seem right at this point, I'll agree.  It's highly unlikely what you have/had is gonorrhea or chlamydia as you took the best antibiotics for each, and by the 7th day you should be doing pretty well.

At this point, I'm  thinking trich might be the most likely.  It's extremely common, and it would not have been cured with drugs you've taken so far.  The common second course of antibiotics in your case would be erythromycin and metronidazole or tinidazole.   Erythromycin would be to cover bacteria which weren't eliminated before and the metronidazole would be to cure the trich.  Tinidazole works the same way, is less commonly used but more effective.

Now it depends on how your medicine system works, you could try the drugs and see if they are effective, or you could take tests to see what you return positive for.  I personally would take tests, but they are easy to get here in the states.

by daggotht, Jul 25, 2007 12:35PM
could it have appeared naturally in my girlfriend.  or could i brought this back from this other girl i slept with?

by stillHurting, Jul 25, 2007 06:54PM
To: daggotht
Some women do carry bacteria which is normal flora to them but can cause problems with their partners.  Yeast is also a possibility.  But gonorrhea or chlamydia is never considered normal bacteria.  Trich is not a bacteria, but is also not part of a healthy person's flora.

Since I have no idea what you have, and you have no tests to even narrow it down, speculating on what it is exactly is not going to be easy.  The only thing I could say is that most bacterial would have been cured by the antibiotics you've taken.

by daggotht, Jul 26, 2007 10:21AM
I went back to the doctors cuz symptoms weren't completly cleared.  They gave me the result of my 1st tests.  I had chlamydia.  They prescribed me with Doxycycline for 10 days to make sure it's gone.  If the second test comes back negative I did, they told me to stop taking them.

If ever the bacteria wasn't gone, is it possible that my girlfriend also needs treatment?  she didn't have any symptoms and we don't know if she was infected...all she did is take the first cocktail I took.

by stillHurting, Jul 26, 2007 07:03PM
To: daggotht
Your girlfriend definitely needed treatment, but she got it.  It would probably work in her case, 1g azithromycin is an excellent treatment,  but the fact that it didn't seem 100% in your case makes me wonder.

What I would do is finish your antibiotics, do NOT have unprotected sex with her, and 3 or so weeks from now, have her tested for chlamydia as well.  If your last test comes back negative, leave it at that, if it's positive, then you should retest at the same time your girlfriend does.

by daggotht, Aug 01, 2007 12:28PM
after 7 days, my symptoms had greatly reduced but they still prescribed me with doxycyclin.  now i'm completly cleared but the result of the second test still came back positive (when i went after 7 days of taking my single dose).

before i even took doxycyclin, on the 9th day after my inital treatment, symptoms had completly disappeared.  is it possible that the first treatement only took longer or that it simply didn't work?

i wanna know cuz my gf was not put on doxycyclin and i wonder if it's like i  was infected with a resistant strain or if my 2nd test simply picked up latent symptoms.

by stillHurting, Aug 01, 2007 01:18PM
To: daggotht
Chlamydia would be more likely to be resistant to doxycycline than azithromycin, however in any particular case it's impossible to say.  And Chlamydia resistance to anything is rare, it's not like gonorrhea in that sense.  But I would not rule it out.

Yes, it's possible you might have been cured before you even took the doxy.  One thing about NAAT tests is that they are positive on detection of DNA. They do NOT require live organisms and so can occasionally detect dead bacteria that your body is still washing out.  It's not a false positive in the sense that they are still detecting the DNA, but it could be a false positive in the sense that the infection was essentially gone.

If it were me, since you did test positive that last time, I'd finish the doxy, wait a couple of weeks, and get another test along with your girlfriend.  That's the playing it safe route, but it's the way to be confident it's not going to come back.

by daggotht, Aug 01, 2007 01:43PM
that is very useful information.  thanks a lot.

i know we should get tested again, but let's just say that the more this drags out, the more my gf is reminded about me cheating and bringing back that ****.

so i'm trying to reassure her, while being honest.

by Wear/a/Jimmy, Aug 03, 2007 09:11AM
This is an awesome thread...  StillHurting, it is hard to believe you are not a physician....

Any how, thank you both for the continued thread, and especially the up dates.

The thing I found interesting is you did not get a shot of Rocefin. That is really begining to become the standard treatment for gonorhea. Gon. has hit superbug status, and Rocefin has become the first and last line of defence.....

But I guess it does not matter if you tested pos for chlam. I imagine you are drip free by now, and happy.

by daggotht, Aug 08, 2007 12:56PM
Not to revive this thread for nothing, but seems like my symptoms are coming back.

Is it possible that after azythromycin and doxycyclin, i still have chlamydia?

It's starting to hurt when I urinate and the tip of my penis, i still have very very very silght transparent discharge and for some reason, is now filled with harlmess red pimples all over the place (the same epidermal pimples after long sessions of sex, though in this case the amount is rather abnormal)

It's been almost a month since my first treatment.
Is it possible that both haven't worked?

by devious, Aug 12, 2007 10:43AM
I was recently diagnosed with clamydia (chlamydia),and was given a single dose of azithromycin, and it was 2000 mg. I've read most doses are 1000mg. My partner and I took it the same day. He recently has been having back pain, burning during urination, and a sore testicle. He had to do a urine test. I was wondering if clamidia would still show up,even if it's been 2 weeks since we both took the 2000mg of azithromycin?

by stillHurting, Aug 13, 2007 01:12PM
To: daggotht
It's possible you still have chlamydia, though unlikely.  But there's a chance that you might have something other than chlamydia.   Since so much time has elapsed, I'd get checked again for chlamydia.  If positive, then another round of antibiotics would be in order.  If negative, but still with symptoms, I'd still get tested for trich and possibly mycoplasma and ureaplasma.  Those two bacteria are a bit harder to get rid of than chlamydia.  There's no reason you can't pick up multiple infections at the same time.

by stillHurting, Aug 13, 2007 01:58PM
To: devious
Generally, it's best to ask a different question in a new thread. That said:

2g azithromycin is used for gonorrhea as well.  So your dosage was probably to cover all the bases.  It is certainly usually going to be enough for chlamydia.

2 weeks after a 2g dose, it's very unlikely your partner would test positive for chlamydia.  If I can ask, how were you diagnosed?

Hey bud, you seem to really know your stuff. wonder if you could help me ou there. I had abit of discharge got it checked out and the doc told me its an n.s.u. (inflamed uretha what ever reason) sent of a urine sample aswell. he gave me 4 tabs 250g (which is used to clean up chlamedyia he told m) of azithromycin to be taken in one go. after 12 hours i consumed alcohol. do you think that would affect it? i wasnt told that i couldnt drink and thought that 12 hours is more than enough for the system to digest the antibiotic. what are your thoughts?

by auntiejessi, Aug 20, 2008 12:31PM
Alcohol is fine with azithromycin, but it could irritate the bladder and urethra, causing some pain, etc.

But the meds will still work.

hi auntie jessi basically its been a week and one day since using the azithromycin, my symptoms have cleared up, but notice a slight sticky residue within my urethra. but the discharge has gone completley. is it more a case of what im noticing is the last of the infection clearing up or do i need another dose?

by sunchyne, Sep 21, 2008 06:12PM
Noticed a little tingle when urinating on wednesday, went to doctors on thursday. Was given a shot of rocephin for possibility of gonorhea and rx for azithromycin 250 x4 to be taken stat. took them immediately and I noticed on Friday the tingling turned turned into a burning sensation and there seemed to be more a discharge. Now on Sunday the burning disappeared but the discharge seems to be the same. I know everybodys body reacts differently to medicines, but what would be considered a normal amount of time for the symptoms and infection to be rid of my body. Its been 3 days going on 4?

by auntiejessi, Sep 21, 2008 11:31PM
You should start your own thread after this, but you should notice a marked improvement in the next few days.  If you don't see that, follow up with your doctor.

Go back in no less than a month, and the chances are very slim that it didn't work if you took all the pills as directed

Hi, i had been diagnose  chlamydia a year ago , and the dr gave me doxycycline for 2 weeks , and i was still having the discharge, i didnt had sexual intercourse while i was  taking the pills,  and i did also went to other different  private clinics ,hospitals again , and they gave more of the antibiotics and i went for vaginial swap test for few times , the dr said it was cleared but im still having the discharge till now ? , i even went for pap smear and swap test  on july this year  the test was normal and i got no bacteria infection. Why am i  still having discharge ?  and the dr said it  is normal.

I have the clamydia (chlamydia)/gonorhea symptoms...went to the DR...and he gave me Doxycycline, 10 days worth, twice a day...I've just today taken the last pill, but I still have very mild symptoms, they've calmed down heaps, but not completely gone, still have a discharge coming out, probly not as much but still there, and it still hurts a tiny bit when I pee....whats up with me?....plus, my girl doesn't even know anything about it....she is not infected as I haven't slept with her since my one night stand 2 weeks ago...and it's getting harder to fend her off....she's gonna wonder whats going on.. I'm gonna go see the doc again and get rechecked...plus when I rang, they still didn't have the results of my urine and swab

I have had symptoms consistent with those of Chlamydia for little under a week now. I went to a clinic this morning for urine test and expect the results in a week (I believe). I was prescribed an antibiotic and just took 4 tablets of Azithromycin (4x250mg) an hour and a half ago. Like some of the previous posts before I am anxious and praying to see some improvement soon.

I'm hoping its its not Gonorrhea since the symptoms are so similar. Meanwhile just waiting to see how soon I can feel an improvement. Thanks everyone who posted before, those contributions were really helpful to know what to expect and when!

Sorry for the double post. Ive never done this before.

Is this Trich thing a real possibility can that last for months like this..

It shows no signs of being cured anytime soon. the discharge is very light, the main pain seems to be an inflammation and very noticable meatus irritation. You need to find out what you were tested for, if any results came in, and why you were given tetracycline.  That's not a very effective medication for any std.

hey, I was diagnosed with trichomoniasis ans chlamydia on Dec. 5th, I don't know what pills they gave me, but they gave me 4 pills for the trich, and 2 for the chlamydia.

I was told not to have sex until it went away, and if I did, to use protection.

my bf and I had sex last night, and the condom broke, it's been a month now since we've gotten our treatment, I wanted to know if it would be gone by now, or if we have something to worry about.

by auntiejessi, Jan 07, 2009 11:16PM
Was your bf ever treated?

If he wasn't, you need to go back and get re-tested and treated, and your bf needs to be treated as well.

If he was treated for both trich and chlamydia, you all should be fine now.

That's the proper treatment, and make sure you take both tablets together.

It takes 7 days to cure, so no sex for 7 days, and you should let your recent partners know about this so they can also test.  It can lead to a lot of serious complications if it isn't treated.

Well, its possible you don't have gonorrhea, but have something like NGU instead.  See www.ashastd.org.  Testing will help sort it out.

I was tested for chlamydia about a week ago. I got my results back on april 28 i think. Ive been on doxy and i took the zithro (4 pills) but it seems like my symptoms havent improved one bit. Im a girl and im really irritated, the only thing that lightened up was the dicharge. About how long will it take for symptoms to show any improvement?

To: chlamydia and Gonorrhea patients.
when i had the white discharge and had a really hard time peeing i went to the doctor and after the he inserted a Qtip in my penis and a urine test it was Gonorrhea and usually people who have it also tend to get Chlamydia so they treat you for both at the same time. they give u one pill for Gonorrhea and 4 pills for Chlamydia. for some people they give u 4 pills for chlamydia and to other they guy you 14 pills to take 2 for 7 days.
exact same thing just that 4 pills (one time treatment) is more costly especially in canada and countries where health care is free and they give u the pills for free but in the US where u guys pay for health care they probably prescribe what you can afford.

He said
Donot have any sex for 7 days. after that re visit and he will do a urine test to see if im clean if not then another 7 days and revisit .by then should be totally clean

donot drink Alocohol while treating these conditions . if u took 5 pills at once then u can have a drink he said after 5 days but try not drinking for a week. but if you are doing the 14 pill treatment you cannot drink for 2 weeks. alocohol slows down the effect and messes up the work of these pills

sorry for not using any medical terms or words im not good with that stuff  :)

hope this was helpful..
play safe
make sure u tell the nurse at the clinic to call people u have had sex with so she can call them and tell them they had sex with someone with these two infections and they should come for a test. its anonymous so donot worry but sometimes one of your friends with benefits is quite good so you make sure they get treated because if you sleep with them again you will catch the disease from them

also people who has the infection in their throat or anus are unaware of it for a long time since symptoms might not show up for months.. where as if you got it in your penis from oral your symptoms will show a little sooner.

Hello all,

I am a 26 year old woman who has just been diagnosed with Chlamydia. I am scared because I didn't have any symptoms at all. The only symptom I must say I had was abdominal pain. I didn't pay any attention because I usually **** before my menstrual. I went to the doctor's for an annual check-up and she said I had a urinary track infection. She prescribed me medicine and my pain went away. I did have some discharge, but again I thought it was normal, because as women we do experience discharge. She called me back and said that lab results came back and that I had Chlamydia. I am scared because I have never had a std. she prescribed me a pill that starts with an A sorry I don't know the name of it, but I took 4 500mg pills at one time. How long does it take to clear up and will this ever come back, will I be okay? Please help

I am 20 yrs old. Arounf Tuesday last week i noticed a white dischaarge leaking from my penis. when it dries up if sometimes becomes a yellowish greenish color. i went online to look up the symptoms and im worried that i could have gonoreha. but unlike everyone else. my urine is not an intense burn. the first 2 days after noticing the discharge my urine felt like i had drinking too much soda. it wasnt so much a burn. and i have no swelling or disformations on my penis. i am goin to get tested this weds. but i just want to know wat i could expect back. is this a urinary tract infection? or is this what i think it is..

To: Hi
Would 500mg of Cephalexin day 1 after a symptom and 500mg Cipro day 2 after symptoms and 1 gm of Azithromycin day 1 of symptoms knock out Gonorrhea and/or Chlamydia?  I received oral sex (male) here from someone I think  might have infected me.  Two days after exposure, I had the very tiny bit of bright white discharge.
I noticed that this morning I had a small about of discharge spots on my underwear after having taken the Cephalexin and Axithormycin.  I have a partner but haven't exposed him and am wondering if I can have sex again in a week.  This all sounds weird but I'm not in a place where I can get good western medical treatment.
If anything I would guess it would only be gonorrhea because I understand that getting Chlamydia from receiving oral sex is not common.  Help!

I was just put on Cipro for a burning sensation when I pee and for a yellow/white discharge from my penis. After the prescription is complete how long until this STD is out of my system? Will I be able to receive oral sex?
