Sometimes, HSV1 lies dormant, so may have it and not known about it. However, if you knew your status prior to meeting him, you have contracted it by simply kissing him.

Hi, how was he diagnosed with genital herpes, was a swab test done? If so then he contracted it from oral sex from someone that has oral herpes. You say youve never had a cold sore but that doesnot mean you dont have oral herpes, only a blood test would confirm this. Take the igg type specific test and if your negative then you did not give it to him and maybe he got it before he met you. I would suggest that he have a blood test as well and if its negative then he just contracted it.
