I had unprotected sex with a Thai sex-worker in Hong Kong in one drunk night

On March 28th 2006, I met a Thai girl at a tourist bar in Hong Kong. In a very intoxicated state, she led me to a motel and we had unprotected oral and vaginal sex. I did not know what came over me to do so but she did not ask me for money. But I found out the next day tons of Thai sex workers come to Hong Kong to find work and maybe land a boyfriend.

Today is April 1st and I am so worried that I might have picked up an STD or even worse HIV.

I been reading about HIV subtypes- HIV subtype E is very prevalant amongst HIV carriers in Thailand. Is there more of a risk for me because of this?

I been reading about risk statistics for HIV transmission, numbers vary from website to website. What I did was a one time sexual encounter. What is the risk really if the person I was with is HIV+?

I also been very fatigue and been sleeping a lot for the past 2 days. Today, I finally start having an itchy throat and I am sure I am coming down with a flu or a cold. Is this a symptom for HIV or any other STDs?

I am scared to death and I told myself I would never be so irresponsible ever again.

Thanks,

Worryingboy

Well, I had the same experience as the OP, IE drunk and ending up in bed with a Thai sex worker on March 31.

I experienced a burning sensation in penis when withdrawing from her, and my outer urinary tract has been itching since, on and off. I have not really noticed significant discharge.

Apart from that I have a sore neck. Only the right side of it though.

All the symptoms started within 2 hours after having sex.
I am very nervous about giving the infection, if any  on to anyone.

omggggg what is going on.  Same issue.  I had unprotected sex a couple of times with people I don't know.  I have had problems holding my pee, along with cold sweats at night.  These red bumps spread slowly all over my penis.  I went to see a urologist, who told me that I was fine.  How is this possible?  No burning sensations when I ****, but sometimes my whole genital area is itchy.  Besides this, I've been throwing up twice a week involuntarily after a certain meal, usually with red meat.  My RIGHT SIDE of my throat has been hurting, and i've been losing weight.  Is there anything I can be prescribed to save myself?  I lost 30 pounds since this all happened.  I went from 146 to 117 pounds in a half year.  Doc, i'm scared... am i going to die?  What does this all mean

Doc, I am surprised that you dont recommend testing for herpes. Looks like that is the most dangerous STI that one can easily get from any kind of sexual encounter ( something like fingering, just touching your genital anywhere on the skin near the genitals etc). Is it because of no symptoms? thanks, just trying to educate myself

I do not keep track of specific virus types and subtypes (clades) in Thailand or other countries.  Even when one person has HIV, the risk of transmission from any single episode of vaginal sex is low, especially in the female to male direction--on the order of one chance in 1000-2000 episodes of intercourse.  And the oral sex risk is low enough to be considered zero.  Your fatigue, itchy throat, and other symptoms cannot be due to HIV or any STD; they came on too soon after the event and anyway the symptoms themselves don't sound like any STD or HIV.  You probably caught a cold from the lady.

Given the level of anxiety you are experiencing, you probably should be tested for STDs:  a urine test for gonorrhea and chlamydia after a week or so, and blood tests for HIV and syphilis in about 6 weeks.  In the meantime, don't lose any sleep over this.  The odds are strongly in your favor that you didn't get infected.

Good luck-- HHH, MD
