Is he lying to me?

My boyfriend went to the clinic yesterday because he said he had a bump on his penis. The bump disappeared by the time he saw someone but they tested him and told him he might have Mono. They gave him a medication called Azithromycin and they told him he couldn't drink alcohol for 3 days or have sex for a week. And he said they also told him he could still kiss. I thought mono could only be spread through saliva, so why is this? Could he possibly have something else, like an STD? Could he be lying to me? And is Azithromycin a common medicine for Mono? Should I be worried? Also, if these symptoms dont sound like Mono, what do you think it could be? Thank you in advance for any replies.

Azithromycin is for chlamydia, and it will go away.

Antibiotics are used for bacterial infections, and those can be cured.

Mono is a virus, and an antibiotic wouldn't be used for that - viruses don't respond to antibiotics.

I don't know if he's lying to you, but if he isn't, he is very confused.  Is this a regular clinic or an std clinic?

They didnt say outbreak, I guess that was poor word choice on my part. He says he doesn't know what dose the medicine is but they're really big pills. Last night he threw up 2 hours after taking the medication. He called the clinic to tell them and they told him to come in and get more. While he was on the phone he said he threw up "some pill" he got for mono and right away the guy asked if it was Azithromycin. (This is what he told me, I didnt actually hear the conversation) I called the clinic and left a message asking if they prescribe that for mono, I'm still waiting on the call-back. He told me he wouldn't keep anything this important from me and I'm trying to trust that. But wishful thinking isn't gonna help me sleep at night so I am definitely taking a trip down there tomorrow. I just hope I don't get any bad news, I lost my virginity to him so it would be devastating if I found out I have an STD.
Thanks again for your help.

One more question though...
The STDs that Azithromycin is prescribed for, are they with you for life or do they go away with treatment?

You could re-infect him with whatever it is he has.

And I'm confused (and I'm sure you are too).  Did they say outbreak, or is that your word?  If they said outbreak, they are either thinking herpes or warts.

Can you ask him what dose of pills he took?  Is he still taking them?

I think its a really good idea that you are going to the clinic tomorrow.  Good luck!

Wel drinking can affect antibiotics and the whole no sex thing normally is told when you have an STD so the medicine can work.

Follow the Dr's advice.

I didnt see the actual medication. The bump was gone by the time he was seen but they gave him a piece of paper with information about bumps on or around the genitals that aren't particularly serious. I cant recall what they had called it though. But I think they only gave him the medication as a precaution, in case it was serious and he was having an outbreak. He said they would call in about a week to tell him to come pick up his results. My boyfriend also gave me a card that the clinic gave him to give to me. It says if I go in I will receive priority scheduling so I am going on Friday morning for sure, I cant handle this stress for too much longer.

But I do have one more question,
the pamphlet he was given for the medication says he cant have sex (with or without a condom) or drink alcohol. Is this just because of the medication? And what would happen if we did have sex while he was on Azithromycin?

Do you know what dose of antibiotics he took?  1000 mg of azithromycin is the treatment for chlamydia and NGU, and you'd have to be treated for that.

It would probably be 2 or 4 pills, or a nasty powder they mix with water.

They wouldn't give him that for a bump, unless they are incompetent.

Thank you! I talked to him today to clear things up. He told me that he wasn't really worried. They gave him a paper about what the bump might be and its nothing major. Hes still waiting for the other results. They gave him the medication as a precaution I guess and because of the meds he cant drink for 3 days or have sex for a week in case something does show up in the results. Hopefully that isnt a lie on top of a lie but I feel much better and all I can do is trust him. He gave me a card that the clinic gave him to give to me so Im gonna call. And I am definitely still planning on being checked. Thanks again for your help.

Oh and they probably won't be able to tell you his diagnosis yet, but if he has chlamydia, they have to, by law, at least tell you that you are a contact to a confirmed chlamydia infection.

Mono is a virus, and antibiotics like azithromycin don't cure it - nothing does except time.

Mono also wouldn't cause a bump on his penis, and std clinics don't test for that.

Either he is lying to you, or he got some terrible information.

If it were me?  I'd take my happy self down to that clinic, and when they started asking why I was there, I'd say "My boyfriend was here on Monday, and got azithromycin.  He says you all told him he had mono.  He told me he had a bump on his penis.  I want to test, and I want to get treated for whatever it was he was treated for.  His name is ..."

They won't be able to tell you what he was treated for, but they can look it up in his chart, and treat you.  If they tell you that they can't do any of that, ask them who does partner notification, and if they have someone who does that there, you want to speak to that person.

My guess (and its only a guess) is that they tested his urine, and found white blood cells in it.  They probably gave him a preliminary diagnosis of NGU, and are waiting on chlamydia and gonorrhea test results.

This is from wikipedia "Azithromycin is used to treat certain bacterial infections, most often those causing middle ear infections, tonsillitis, throat infections, laryngitis, bronchitis, pneumonia and sinusitis. It is also effective against certain sexually transmitted infectious diseases, such as non-gonococcal urethritis and cervicitis."

So I have not heard it treating mono but it does treat some infections. NGU is an STD but a bump on his penis is not a symptom of NGU.

I don't think he has mono because it is spread through kissing and not sex. So he maybe lying to you or he maybe just telling you what he was told.
