Just Diagnosed with Syphilis

For the first time in my life I had been diagnosed with syphilis. I had unprotected oral sex with a not too well known younger male and developed a small white growth on the side of my tongue. I thought I bit it because I have done that in the past. After a week I went in and got shots (yesterday) and was diagnosed with a 1:1 (what is that) and they said it must have been recently contracted. My question is, having 3 partners in the past three weeks, how far back should I go back to notify other partners? I never noticed any sores on my partners and only gave them oral, they didn't reciprocate. I think one of the 3 (actually the first 3 weeks ago may have passed it on to me). Thank you.

I just got a call saying it was possibly too early to detect. It was possibly a new infection. I was swabbed in my throat as well as in the thing on my tongue but that was gone in a week or so. I am going to retest on 10/6 and I am hoping I never had anything. This whole thing has been stressful, I got myself into it and I understand that medicine is a science and not perfect. I tested neg for other STDs so thats the good news. I guess I should get an HIV test also? I have not participated in risky behaviors to be infected or infect someone with HIV. But how are they going to detect any bacteria if I had the two shots on or about 9/21? I am confused...

Hi there -

1:1 sounds like an old infection, or a false positive.  If it was new, it would be up there like 1:416 or 1:832 or some other high number.

How long after the exposure did you get the spot, and how long after did you test?  It takes at least a couple of weeks for a symptom to appear, and the average is 21 days.  It also takes a few weeks to test positive.

The spot also wouldn't clear up within a couple of days, even with treatment.

It is possible that you had syphilis a long time ago, and that this spot was what got you to test, and found out.  If that's the case, you need a series of 3 shots, not just once.

Someone from the state will likely contact you and will guide you through the partner notification process.  This is EXTREMELY important, and though it may be embarrassing, it is very important that all of your partners within the last few months at least be contacted.  The person who contacts you will help you with the timing.

I have never been tested before and the 1:1 was the amount of bacteria found in my blood. I did get swabbed on the growth and my throat and got the two shots for syph. on thursday of last week. The growth was gone by day two.

no idea what a 1:1 is. call your provider and ask if you aren't sure what it was in reference to.

did you have blood testing done for syphilis or a lesion culture of your mouth symptoms?

when was the last time you were tested prior to this encounter?
