Just found out I have HPV.

I just found out yesterday that my pap I got during my annual exam was abnormal. The nurse told me that there were a few cells that they weren't sure if they were precancerous, cancerous, or not. Since my pap was abnormal they tested me for HPV, which then resulted in being positive. The next step they want me to take is have a colposcopy. I'm scared about this procedure and what the findings might be, the nurse didn't offer anymore help as I guess their office was super busy. Now I'm extremely frightened, have a somewhat idea of what's going to happen during the colposcopy, but have no idea what the findings might be, expect that I could have cervical cancer..Can anyone offer help?

I posted this in the HPV forum first, but I then noticed that there hasn't been any answering going on in a long time..I hope that's ok.

The waiting is the absolute worst part of any of this.  I am glad you are feeling ok after it.  :)

Hang in there, and let me know.

Nope, not at all.  Its just another step in diagnosing what's going on, and deciding the proper treatment.

Thanks for your insight!

So having the colposcopy doesn't necessarily mean I'll have//or have cancer?

The colposcopy is a breeze.  Its like a big magnifying glass they use to look at your cervix.  If you're lucky, you'll get to see your cervix on a great big tv monitor.  ;)

They will likely do a biopsy, and that hurts, but not bad, and I would tell you if it was awful lol).  If you can take ibuprofen, then take some before, and that will help.  You might have some cramping and minor spotting after.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Colposcopy has a picture of it.

About 80% will have HPV in their lifetimes.  Most have no complications from it at all.

I'm sorry you have that type..I don't think I do as I've never physically seen any GW...but of course I'll talk to my health care provider more on that..I hope everything works out for you..I'm 21, and just started planning my future, it feels like someone through a wrench in my planning, lol. I know tons of people who have this stupid virus and I'm just hoping I can get through it all..I have no clue what's going to come from the colposcopy or if they are going to biopsy. I really wish the nurse who explained things to me, would've explained a bit better or taken the time to answer the questions I was asking. I go for my colposcopy 4/11 so keep your fingers crossed for me that it doesn't come back with anything too serious..<3

Hi there. I know how u r feeling. I found out about 6 months ago that I have HPV (genital warts) and I have precancerous cells in my uterus. They did a D & C and a Hysteroscopy to find out about the precancerous cells. My Dr. put me on a hormone medication hoping that will help. Being that I am an SSBBW woman and have many health issues (diabetes, asthma) they don't want to do surgery on me unless it is absolutely necessary due to the risks. I am scared s***less. It is always in the back of my head. I worry about the surgery and about my future life of ever having a normal relationiship with a man. I have never had children and now I wont be able to due to my health and my age and all. Just remember the best thing u can do is ask questions no matter how silly u may think they are or how scare u get dont be afraid to let that out to them. I wish u good luck. Keep us posted.
