Meds not working???

About 3 weeks or so now my boyfriend started having Chlamydia symptons again. (we are gay and this happened back in June as well). We had gone and both received 2 grams zitromax and he was given doxyccline twice daily for a week as well and everything went away.
Now 6 mos later same meds but appears to be having no effect? After about a week i noticed I was having some lower back dull pressure and what appeared to be mucus in my stoole. I was kind of suprised because I thought the 2 gms zithro would have killed anything. My dr. has given me 2 weeks of doxyclcline (I've taken i weeks supply so far with no changes) and my bf is on his way back to the dr because he is starting symptons again (penile). Is there a strain of this that doesnt react to meds?? Not freaked out yet but really tired of the symptons...Any ideas?

You don't provide enough information about the nature of the problem, you refer indirectly to rectal/intestinal symptoms. But regardless of the site of infection, azithromycin and doxycycline are 100% effective against chlamydia. If you still have any infection at all, it's something else. Proctitis (rectal infection) is commonly caused by things other than chlamydia, but most of those infections would respond to the same antibiotics. And many people have rectal and intestinal symptoms due to non-infectious causes.
So most likely you don't have an infection at all, but I'm speculating since I don't really know what you're talking about. In any case, you should continue to follow up with your healthc care provider or, if you're not certain s/he is on top of the problem, get a second opinion, e.g. from your local health department STD clinic. Or perhaps a gastroenterologist.

In june my bf tested pos for chlad. with penile symptons, I had rectal symptons. We took 2 grams zithro and doxc.Everything went away.
Now, we have the same symptoms and took the same medication but nothing is going away.
He has/had penile drainage and burning when peeing. He tested positive for chlad.
I have lower back pressure and mucus in my stoole. (no rectal swab was done).
It has been 3-4 weeks now and we have not had any sex since, so
we havent given anything back and forth. It seems strange to me that he would test pos for chlad. and I have the correct symptoms but the normal medication isn't changing anything.
1) One of you is having other partners and got reinfected. I'm not accusing either you or your partner, just saying it is an issue I would address first in any patient with this story who came to my clinic.
2) You might have heard of the uncommon STD called lymphogranuloma venereum, or LGV. It's nothing fancy, just infection with a particular strain of chlamydia, but one that tends to cause particularly severe symptoms, especially when it infects the rectum. LGV has recently increased in frequency among gay/bi men, with most reports so far coming from San Francisco, NYC, London, and the Netherlands. Older data suggested that LGV strains required more intensive treatment for cure. There is some question about this, but it's at least a possibility. You should raise this possibility with your provider; or if s/he isn't on top of these issues, visit your local health department STD clinic, or look for an infectious diseases specialist in your area. If you happen to be in one of the places I mentioned, it should be easy to find a provider who knows how to test your chlamydia strain and otherwise evaluate and advise you about this possiblity.
