Moxifloxacin treatment for STDs in Asia

Hi,

About a month ago, I had an itch in my urethra (penis) and there was a foul smelling discharge but no pus like symptoms. As I am currently situated in China and am not too confident of the Chinese hospitals, I visited an International Medical Center where the doctor diagnosed a Chlamydia infection. There was only a urine sample test done and I was prescribed Ofloxacin. My itch and discharge cleared up after I was done with the medication, 4 x 100 mg tablets, 2 times daily for 5 days. As a side note, when I was taking the medication, I don't feel too well, feeling weak, dizzy, slight nausea and couldn't sleep properly (bad dreams).

However, fast forwarding about 2 weeks later, my symptoms returned. This time, I have an itch in my urethra and there was a pus like discharge (slight yellow white color). My urethra feels irritated/ itchy/ slight pain when I urinate and there is no fever. This time, I decided to visit a Chinese hospital (it's much cheaper) and the doctor did a swab test by putting a cotton swab down my urethra 3 times (it hurts... trust me). I wasn't diagnosed anything yet as the bacterial cell culture test will be ready 3 days later. But the doctor mentioned that my white blood cell count is slightly higher than normal ( WBC count taken from the swabs, not from my blood work) and mentioned that there might be an infection so she prescribed Avelox (Moxifloxacin), 4 x 400mg once daily.

The background is, I am Chinese male, been with my girlfriend for about a year and both of us have been loyal and we were both asymptomatic before this event. My girlfriend remains asymptomatic and we had sex at least once between  the above 2 mentioned events.

So my question is this, What could my diagnosis be and how effective is Moxifloxacin (I have taken ofloxacin) as a treatment for STDs or Urethritis, especially in South East Asia?

Thanks,
Andrew

Hi Choksw,

I realize that your post is almost exactly 6 years old but I am in a similar situation to what you were. Did you get a diagnosis or did your symptoms ever go away after moxifloxacin?  I first visited a Chinese STD hospital and tested positive for two forms of mycoplasma.  I first took Doxycycline and then Moxifloxacin, neither one cleared up my symptoms. I will likely go to visit a urologist soon.

I hope your problem was cleared up.
