Mycoplasma hominis/ureaplasma and pregnancy

by atalossandfrustrated, Apr 13, 2008 02:37AM
Since my son was born via c-section last year, I have suffered persistent burning and a urea and mycoplasma hominis infection that has been unresponsive to several courses of antibiotic treatment (to include Zithromax, Tinidazole, Erythro, and a Fluroquinolone).  The burning has increased and I am also experiencing spotting in between periods, which I have never had before.  I am not on birth control, to be honest, my husband and I cannot be intimate as a result of the pain.  Physical therapy for vaginismus has made no impact, which is especially apparent seeing how symptoms are worse.  My marriage is suffering because of the persistent, unexplained burning, I am fearful of future pregnancies because of how the baby may be affected by the lingering urea/mycoplama hominis infection, and now spotting between periods has been added to the list.  I have read conflicting research regarding the effects of the infections on pregnancy.  I am frustrated because I want to comfortably "be" with my husband and not have to worry if I do get pregnant if the baby will be at risk.  Thank you for your help

Hi there -

I'm sorry you are going through so much, and I can't imagine how frustrating this is for you.

I would suggest that you post this in the experts forum, as they will be much better able to address this.  It does cost $15, though.

At the top of this page, you will see the icon for forums.  Click that, and the experts forums are on the right side.  Click on STDs, then click on the green link for post a question, and it will take you through the steps.

I'm sorry that I can't help you, but its beyond my scope.  I'll be interested to see what the doc says.

Good luck and I really hope you feel better,
AJ

re: ureaplasma treatment
Hi-I just read your posting from April. I hope youve found answers since then! I thought Id respond simply just to say that I too have had no success from the two antibiotics treatments Ive done- 1st treatment: Zythromax (single dose) +Flagyl during 6 days, 2nd treatment: Pristinamycine (10days).
My gyneco has just proposed a third treatment (!!) - Vibramycine aka Doxycycline (12 days). Being a little sceptical I reconsulted my very first results where my local doctor had me do a antibiogramme for the ureaplasma germ and Doxycycline is marked as 'Resistant'!!! I have sent this info to my gyneco and await his response.....
I feel a bit like a human experiment for these doctors....but I also wonder what kind of bacteria we are dealing with if its so hard to get rid of! There seems to be a lot of conflicting information on the web.
The antibiotics treatments have also caused me to have over abundant periods which cause me to be completely out of circulation for a few days- perhaps your spotting is due to your treatments.
Anyway if you have learnt anything along the way I would be grateful to hear about it!
Thanks

Oh I'm sorry you are going through this.  This can be tricky to treat.
