Mycoplasma

Can you get mycoplasma while having protected sex or from a hand job.  How serious is mycoplasma and what are the effects of having it.  I read that arthritis can cause this does having psoriactic arthritis put you at risk for getting it? My gf was diagnosed with it and the dr gave us antibiotucs to take for seven days, will i need to get tested after the seven days on meds? Please advise!

Are you certain that the test was for mycoplasma genitalium and not mycoplasma hominis? In the US, it is almost impossible to find a test for mycoplasma genitalium. The comments above from shaken assume that you are talking about m. genitalium. M. hominis is generally considered to be less consequential for you or your girlfriends health (although some doctors will treat it with antibiotics).

If you are sure that it is m. genitalium and that the test was done via culture, please let us know where you live and how the doctor ordered it. I (and many others) have been looking for quite some time for a m. genitalium test (I have only been able to find one lab that will do it). Just so you are aware, the test involves a urethral swab and the cost is $275 (assuming you live close enough to one of the few labs that is willing to do it). In the UK many online services offer a urine test to diagnose mycoplasma genitalium (they, however, will not accept your urine sample internationally).

What is the procedure for testing a man for this? And should I get tested after the meds run out? To make sure i am in the clear?

That antibiotic isn't proven to be effective against certain Mycoplasma.  IT really depends on the strain.  Typically Azythromycin works well, then after that Moxifloxacin it the second line of treatment.  Moxi is in the same family as Oflox, but for some reason it doens't work as well.  Both are quinolones and work against a broad spectrum of bacteria though.  Let us know how things progress.

yes that is fine to treat with that antibiotic.  it's unfortunate that they didn't test you too before treating you.

mycoplasma is sexually transmitted but usually protected sex isn't a risk. No way to know if you had it prior to your current partner and transmitted it to her or if you received it from her.

no, having arthritis isn't an increased risk for contracting it.

The prescribed antibiotic is ofloxacin 400 mg 2x a day for seven days. Is this effective?

It can cause Pelvic Inflammatory Disease in women and persistent urethritis in men, and posibily lead to epididymitis and prostatitis.  In other words, it should not be left untreated.  Did you doc give you Doxycycline?  Please return and ask for Azithromycine, the 5 day prescription.  Doxy is not effective against Mycoplasma.

Not sure what strain it is but it was found by taking a culture! How dangerous is mycoplasma and what can it cause?

Indeed you can get it from protected sex

The guy who started the thread stated he had protected sex at a massage parlor.  How he got it from protected sex???  Who knows, maybe he didn't use the condom correctly.

I've never heard of arthritis causing a mycoplasma infection, but a mycoplasma infection can cause arthritis.

Do you know what strain of mycoplasma it is specifically?  and do you know how they diagnosed your gf with it?  Typically it's a costly test that is done in specialized labs, so routine testing isn't readily available.  If you have the ability to test for it, you should take advantage of it.  Let us know how it goes.
