NGU Zithromax treatment/ side-effects question

by jonnies24, Apr 01, 2009 06:26PM
Please move if not in right forum. I had unprotected sex with an ex-gf about 1 month ago. A week later I was experiencing discomfort and itchiness in my urethra. My partner recently tested negative for chlamydia and other common std's. Here's where it get sort of confusing... I had a bad sore throat about 9 days ago and the doctor prescribed zithromax to treat it (not strep-throat). So I began taking the antibiotics. On day 3 I saw my doctor about the urethra discomfort. I tested negative for chlamydia and he diagnosed me with NGU. So on day four, I took 2 doses of 500mg of Zithromax within ~8 hours apart. However, he prescribed taking 1g in 1 dose. It is about 30 hours after taking the first 500mg and I still have slight discomfort. I was wondering if taking the 1g not all-together in 1 dose would be ineffective against treating the NGU. Mind you I also was taking the Zithromax for a sore throat which is now gone. I don't have any discharge or any burning when urinating but my penis head was somewhat dry and flaky yesterday which is now gone. I was also wondering if the urethral swab could be causing irritation ~30 hours after std test. Thanks so much in advance.

Recap on questions:
1)  Will taking 1g not all-together in 1 dose would be ineffective against treating the NGU? - Also treating sore throat.
2)  Are symptoms after taking low doses of Zithromax the first 3 days and then the eventual 1g common and should I go back to doctor for another 1g dose or should I wait a few days to see if symptoms subside?
3)  Can urethral swab possibly cause irritation ~30 hours after std test?

Thanks so much

Hi there -

You need to take it 1gm at a time.  Its also not unusual that symptoms haven't cleared.  It takes time for the meds to work.  This can take a few days to a week.

I'd call the doctor and ask what he thinks.

Yes, but you could just have irritation from NGU.  Its possible that you got the same bacteria in your throat as in your urethra, if you received oral sex.  It can just take time to heal, but call your doctor and see what he wants you to do about the meds.

Thanks a lot for the advice... Do you recommend I wait to see if the symptoms get better or try to get another dose now? I'm on a University and its really hard to get in contact with the same doctor and even a refill. Our health care system is very poor. Thanks

I'd call and check with the doctor.  I can't give that kind of advise.

Update- okay so I've been to the doctor twice about this and I'm still having problems. So the antibiotics have run their course and 90% of the discomfort in my urethra has gone away. However, I still get this light throbbing/ stinging feeling maybe twice a day. Also, about 3 days after taking the Zithromax, I started getting anal itching. It itches a lot and and feels similar to the feeling I had in my urethra following exposure. All of the tests have come back negative. I've never inserted anything into my anus. I've been reading about a possible yeast infection maybe due to the antibiotics? It is impossible its warts or anything down there as me and my partner have tested negative for everything. Should I go back to my doctor and what should be the focus of our conversation? I'm not sure what this could be. I thought I had oral thrush but when I saw the doctor he said it couldn't be. Regardless, I insisted on being prescribed Nystacin but have not taken it yet in hopes of this disappearing. Will taking it possibly help the anal itching if it is in fact a yeast infection? And should I be worried that I'm am still having urethral problems + 2 weeks after taking Zithromax if it was in fact NGU? Please help I need advice! Thanks in advance!

They gave you Zithromax for NGU?!  I took 1.5g of Zithromax about two weeks after catching my NGU/NSU and I still have urethritis...  Even after 12 days of Doxycycline it still hurts.  The 'D-Mannose' supplement I started a day and a half ago seems to be helping, but everytime I think it's getting better, it comes right back.  It's a b'as't'ard.

Maybe if I think it will get horribler and I will die soon, THEN it will magically go away.

Yeah... I started taking Nystatin oral suspension 2 days ago and symptoms are still there. The discomfort in my urethra is almost 100% gone but I'm just itchy all over. I don't know what to do.

Can anyone help? I have no visible sores, no rashes, no redness or anything. I'm just still getting a very small throbbing irritation a few times a day and all over my penis and scrotum itches. The itching in the anus has gotten better but still present. It tends to dissapate during the day and get worse at night... Could this indicate jock itch? or some sort of penile fungal infection? I'm just confused on why my anus would itch. I'm a heterosexual male and never have inserted anything in there. Please help university doctors are worthless!
