NGU transmission

I recently went on an overseas trip and received oral, no condom, from a female sex worker and contracted NGU.

Day 4 - I had no symptoms but I self medicated with Tetracycline.  I know this was probably a mistake b/c it could make the NGU resistent but I have a Significant Other (SO).  At the time, my concern was to ensure I didnt' have anything before we were together.  I only had 9 tetracycline 500mg pills.  I took 3 at once and then 2 per day for the next 3 days.

Day 8 - no symptoms and thougth it was ok to have unprotected sex with my SO.  Embarrassed to say I didn't know what NGU was.  I was worried about Gonorrhea and perhaps Chlamydia (have since learned that very difficult to catch from oral)

Day 12 - first symptoms.  I felt like I had urine leakage, slight itch.

Day 14 - diagnosed with NGU.  No Chlamydia or Gonorrhea (found out two days later).  I'll never know if I had Gon. because of the Tetracycline I took.  STD clinic gave me Cefixime 500mg and 7 days of Dox, twice a day.

Day 18 - SO is diagnosed with strep throat.  I thought I hit the lottery.  She is given seven days of Amoxicillin 875mg, each capsule, twice a day.  Have since learned that Amox may not be best to treat nonchlamydial NGU.  My symptoms were worse during this week.  Burning when peeing, feeling of urine leakage.

Day 21 - my symptoms are much better, gone.  Finish medication.

Day 29 - slight symptoms return.  feeling of urine leakage.  I can't get in to see my urologist until Jan 16th.  Throwing caution to the wind, I decide to self medicate with Dox for 3 weeks.  2 capsules per day 100mg, each capsule. I'm in day two of self medicating.

Questions:  1.  What are the odds that my SO didn't catch NGU since I took the Tetracycline before we were together?  2. What are the chances that the Amox would have worked after the fact for her strep throat?  3. I receiced NGU from unprotected oral sex.  Because it was most likely from a form of bateria in the mouth, it it plausable that a man could give NGU to a female from oral?  4. how likely would one dose of Cefixime 500mg treat NGU?  5. Finally, is it possible that I'm still contagious?  I didn't miss any medications but I have slight symptoms.

Thank you in advance if you can find time to respond.  It's hard to recall what life was like before we had these forums where there is so much useful information.

Don't take any more meds.  You don't know what's going on, and you aren't helping yourself if you take the wrong meds, and being on antibiotics can skew the test results.

Sorry for the mis-type, I've already taken a full course of Amox and Doc.  Again, I was diagnosed with Strep as well.  Given Amox by my doctor and given Dox by STD clinic.  I've finished both medications.  I decided to take more Dox b/c my symptoms returned.

Thanks for your response. I should have also pointed out that I was diagnosed with strep and took a full course of Amox.  I'm not sure I quite understand if I stop self medicating it would make a difference at this point.  I've not taken a full course 7 days of dox and 7 days of Amox.

Do you have any additional advice?  I still will go to the doctor and get tested but I'm not sure if stopping the medication at this point matters.  I'm more concerned with my SO.

Wow ok.

I don't know if your urine was specifically tested for strep, or how long before you got symptoms that you were with your SO, but if she had strep throat, its possible that you got that genitally.

HOWEVER, you will never know if you keep taking the meds and self medicating.  You need to stop with the meds and get tested.  If you take two weeks of doxy, there is no reason to see your urologist, as he won't be able to test you and get accurate results.  Have them culture your urine.

I don't know the answers to your questions, because it would depend on what bacteria was causing this.  Since strep could (maybe) be a possibility, that would change the course of treatment.
