NSU diagnosis and Doxycycline

by ml80nebr, Apr 12, 2009 01:21AM
Well, I caught something on February 22nd of this year after receiving oral sex.  I'm male by the way.  I have tested TWICE for Chlamydia/Gonorrhea and came clean and one test for NGU which I came clean.  I was first given Zithromax 1.5g over three days which helped the discomfort in my urethra.  In addition to the irritable urethra, there was a strong burning sensation on the surface of the glans and part of my foreskin.

Due to this burning on the glans, I have been using Clotrimazole 1% cream for over three weeks now and it's slowly helping but it still gets irritated.  The doc suspected a fungal infection.  I did three days of (600mg/day)Cefdinir for the urethral "infection" even though he didn't test anything positive.  I quit the Cefdinir because it wasn't gentle on my stomach, but mostly because I was being a wimp about it.

Well, now more than 6 weeks later, I went to a new doc (lost my insurance) and he did a "urinalysis" and said that I tested positive for NSU.  I'm under the assumption that it's not "specific", but just based upon white blood cells in urine as well as a visual inspection, which it was red and itchy by the way.  I DID NOT get to see results or any counts.  Anyways, he prescribed me Doxycycline (200mg/day) for a week.  I'm on the sixth day and the irritation AFTER urinating seems to be coming back.  It's a fullness sensation that is very uncomfortable.

It has markedly IMPROVED over where it was a week ago, but it seems to be coming back the last two days.  Here is the gist:  How effective is Doxycycline on NSU and how soon should I be "cured"?  I am I just worrying?  Will a week of Doxycycline be enough to nip this NSU in the bud?  Will Doxycycline continue to be effective after I finish my 14 pills in one week?  Or perhaps, should I ask for another week of Doxycycline, which would be ok too since this drug is DIRT CHEAP and is absolutely wonderful in terms of side effects.  The side effects are only mildly annoying, which cannot be said about other drugs I have sampled.  However, I hate the "gut rot" as I call it...

Doxy is very effective, and since the symptoms are returning, I'd follow up with your doctor and ask about a possible prostate exam.

Are you taking the meds twice a day or once?  They should be taken twice a day.

Twice a day on the meds.  The doc did suggest a prostate exam...

That's a good next step.

Feel better,

I'm still not sure what the prostate would have to do with this, unless it conveniently started two days after receiving unprotected oral sex.

The symptoms are definitely better after 7 days, but it still feels like something is brewing and I might just need more Doxy.  I'll have to talk to the doc again, and probably pay him money just to do that.

Try and talk to him on the phone first.  No need to go back in and pay money unless he wants to do more testing.

Stranger things have happened than coincidences like timing for prostatitis.  If you can't figure out another cause, have the prostate exam done.

Well, the doc gave me another week of Doxycycline over the phone, which should completely wipe out the NSU given that it has been reduced greatly by a week of the said drug.  I figured a few more days would cure it, but a week should be more than enough.

Good.  I hope it works.  :)

Not sure what's going on, but the urethral irritation seems to be coming back.  I can't believe it.  The Doxycycline intially made it go away for the first 4 days and now it's coming back even though I'm still on Doxycycline.  I'm at a complete loss.  These past months have been real tough because of this.  I wonder if I should try to get an appointment or tough it out with 5 more days of Doxy.  Well the Doxy isn't tough, but the urethral symptoms are.

I tested clean for Chlamydia/Gonorrhea and NGU, but positive for NSU.  What else could cause this and be related to a sexual encounter?  I don't know where to look.  Will they have to violate me with that lubed up finger?

by Vance2335, Apr 15, 2009 08:48AM
It could be something else as AJ had suggested.
Violate you??? They will have to do an exam, it's not violating you.

Well, the doc once again didn't suspect anything to do with Prostate given that I didn't have any of the other symptoms.

Doxycycline has lost it's effectiveness and I seem to have caught a "mystery disease" that causes urethral irritation.  He told me to stop taking vitamin C and I did that a few days ago.

I have to wait all weekend for a Urologist and then spend even more money because I don't have insurance.  Yay!  For the time being, I'll just continue to suffer.  Maybe I will just stop urinating all together.  That means stopping drinking fluids.  Only dry potato chips from now on.

Well, I hope after all this, the urologist can offer some relief.  I know it all stinks, though.  Hang in there.

I'm wondering since I have NSU/NGU, does that mean there are still "unidentified" bacteria in my urethra that may not be affected by the Doxycycline?  I quit Doxy after 12 days worth two days ago and things are getting really touchy.

Because...  some antibiotics affect certain bacteria but not others.  I am wondering could a specific bacteria/irritation causing this discomfort be missed by the Doxycycline or just moderately affected by it given that Doxy DID seem to work for the first few days.

I'm suspecting the Urologist will swab for multiple types of bacteria along with violating my anus.

All this suffering just from oral sex too.... wasn't even REAL sex...

by auntiejessi, Apr 20, 2009 07:05PM
LOL real sex.  :(

Yes, that's what it means.  There is still a bacteria in your urethra.  If they haven't done a urine culture and sperm culture, they should.  I still vote for a prostate exam, but I know you can't force your doc to do it.

Well, things have become much more interesting and I even managed to somehow mangle my balls in the process, but they are ok.

The urethral pain IS subsiding which is bizarre.  It's almost as if NOT using anti-biotics is helping me.  And, either the "D-Mannose sugar supplement" helped me or it is just coincidence that I feel better.  I quit all vitamins, cranberry juice and anything acidic...
I still do get a twinge after urinating sometimes but it's much better.  The new strange symptom is now a "warm" urethra at night.  Truely bizarre.  And the anxiety about the whole situation does NOT help.

I also recented discovered that NGU generally "works itself out" within a period of about three months.  However, present bacteria CAN still be theoretically spread, just like asymptomic STD's.  In addition to that, some antibiotics such as Doxycycline don't always clear the bacteria.  I found that stunning, especially in cases where Doxy failed UP TO 50% of the time in curing urethral bacteria infections(Mycoplasma, Ureaplasma, E Coli... etc.).  Overall, anti-biotics are very effective.

Today, I went to a urologist and they found nothing in particular in my urine.  I paid $120 bucks for that and talked to various doctors and nurses.  What they suggested was a cystoscopy.  That is inserting a camera on a tube to look at the inside of the urethra.  I almost got sick to my stomach on that one but it was ok.  $150 tops I figured...  But more like $1050, and I don't even know if that includes the medication.  No on that one for now.  I'm going to get more D-Mannose.  I'd I'll be friendly to my monkey in the process.
