Nervous about passing herpes to boyfriend

by stargirl12345, Nov 27, 2007 01:22AM
I have genital herpes, and frequent outbreaks. I have been in a relationship with my boyfriend for about 9 months now, and was very clear BEFORE we started having sex that I did in fact have this STD, and he was understanding, and in fact, HE reminded me of how common this particular std is. I have always been vigilant about not having sex during symptomatic times and outbreaks.
We ALWAYS have protected sex. However, last night during the sex I started to feel a weird sensation and this morning I woke up with a sore.
I'm very worried about my boyfriend. I know there is always risk, even higher with an outbreak present, and I know that he was well aware of the risk before he became sexually involved with me, but is there something he could do?
He is a great guy, and I would feel horrible if he gets this from me! Could he start taking valtrex just in case?

no valtrex wouldnt help it, the virus would remain dormant though and he would never notice lol. Relax he dindt catch from u and if he did he knew it was coming. Protected sex means chances are low he got something the good news is that you arent asymptomatic therefor u dont suffer from asymptomatic shedding of the virus. There for if you didnt have a sore which u didnt when you were having sex then you couldnt have infected him. :)

Are you taking daily suppressive therapy so you don't have ob's as often and you can protect your partner? If not - why not?

Only time will tell if he contracted it this time or not. Should he notice any symptoms he should go see his doctor within 24-48 hours of their appearance for proper diagnosis and treatment.

no, i am not taking daily suppressive pills...ah, the wonderful world of no insurance! planned parenthood does not prescribed anything for suppression, only during an outbreak will they give you a prescription for a week's worth of pills.
i've read on the internet that a diet high in lysine is pretty effective in reducing outbreaks, and so i've tried that...not sure if i've noticed any difference.

in the future, how can i be more careful?
i am very, very careful about making sure we have no sexual contact when i think something might be brewing, and this time was no different!
there was nothing to indicate to me that i was having an outbreak...and then boom! i had one!
hopefully this time we are lucky and he's ok, but i don't want to have to worry about this all the time!

Actually the lysine/arginine theory never held up outside of the test tube :(  no reason to change your diet - it doesn't work for most folks.

If your planned parenthood won't give you suppressive therapy - ask to speak to the clinic manager and make a complaint. There is no reason why they shouldn't  prescribe it to you with your frequent ob's!!!  You can get acyclovir fairly cheaply evenwithout insurance. If you can't find it cheaper elsewhere - the herpes homepage has a deal with drugplace.com  to get 6 weeks of acyclovir for suppressive therapy for under $25.

Just avoiding sex during obvious symptoms does help a lot but if you are having frequent ob's you want suppressive therapy to help keep the virus less active and to help you have less ob's. Why have more ob's than you have to in a lifetime?  I know I sure don't have time for them!!!
