Neurosyphilis Testing

I was wondering, because I have read that neuro-syphilis is treated as a separate infection from syphilis can you have neuro-syphilis and be negative for the blood test for syphilis? I realize that its probably a stupid question. I also am wondering if you do test positive for syphilis will your doctor go ahead and recommend a lumbar puncture to test for neuro-syphilis?

I think that is possible, but nerosyphilis typically has some very strong symptoms and it takes years and years to get to that stage.

So you could be negative for normal syphilis in the blood test and still have neurosyphilis? or is that just impossible?

I beleive so as I think the only way to test is a spinal tap.
